Cast against type
When Vin Diesel was cast as a tough Navy SEAL assigned to babysitting duties, eyebrows rose before the film even premiered. It was received with mixed reviews and mixed audience reactions, and yet it went on to earn over $100 million at the box office. Buena Vista Home Entertainment brings The Pacifier home on June 28th. Expect both an anamorphic widescreen and a full frame release. Each will offer a director's commentary, deleted scenes, a blooper reel, and a selection of featurettes, including On Set With Mr. Diesel: Action Hero and Nice Guy . The SRP will be $29.99.

Not for the squeamish

In 1928, Salvadore Dali and Luis Bunuel challenged their audiences with a surrealistic short entitled Un Chien Andalou in which an eye is sliced through with a razor. Seventy-one years later, director Takashi Miike's Audition may provoke similar visceral reactions. From the Lions Gate site, “Deceptively innocent at first, Audition finds Aoyama, a middle aged widower urged by his teenage son and film producer friend Yoshikawa to start dating again. Yoshikawa devises a plan to hold a phony film audition as a way for Ayoama to meet a new woman. During the interview process, Ayoama meets the beautiful Asami, a former ballerina with a suspicious past, Their courtship veers from polite romance to psycho-nightmare!” Restoring two minutes cut for the US theatrical release, this 115-minute uncut version is not for those with weak stomachs; the film pushes the boundaries of horror and shock. The DVD will be released on August 23rd with such special features as: theatrical trailers; director's interview; select scene director's commentary; director introduction; director biography & filmography; photo gallery; liner notes; Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments; and a Ryu Murakama interview. The 1.85:1 film has been newly transferred and will offer English subtitles and a Japanese Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track.

Clever Anime
And there is word that Bandai Entertainment may re-release its popular and entertaining Cowboy Bebop series in the fall. These REMIX titles will sport new video transfers and new Dolby Digital 5.1 audio mixes. I'm rarely attracted to anime made for television, but this is an exception. Expect supplements to include: interviews with the Japanese and American voice talent, commentaries for specific episodes, trailers, promos, and music videos. The SRP for each disc is expected to be $29.98, but I don't know how many episodes will be on each.
