Dysfunctional, but sexy...
Natalie Portman's brief but emotional appearance in Cold Mountain made clear that her emotional range extends far beyond what was required of her in the Star Wars prequels. She delighted in Garden State and soared in Closer. For her role as Closer's Alice, Natalie won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture, and she currently awaits the outcome of her Academy Award nomination for the same performance. One of her co-stars, Clive Owen, also earned Golden Globe and Oscar nominations for his role as Larry in this film about the relationships among four attractive but dysfunctional people. Julia Roberts and Jude Law complete the stellar cast. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release Closer on March 29th as a Superbit title, complete with 5.1 audio tracks in Dolby Digital and DTS. Consequently, the supplements will be rather thin. The SRP is reported to be $28.95.

Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events earned $179 million worldwide despite mixed theatrical reviews. Paramount Home Entertainment brings this droll tale of the three Baudelaire orphans victimized by avarice to DVD on April 26th. Jim Carrey, Meryl Streep, and Jude Law star. (Law certainly has been a busy guy: Lemony, Closer, Sky Captain.) Separate widescreen anamorphic and full screen editions will hit the stores with an expected SRP of $27.95.

Music of the night...

I have fond memories of enjoying Phantom of the Opera on the stage. I'm not normally attracted to stage musicals; I prefer drama and comedy, but perhaps the underling darkness of the play's storyline appealed to me. Successful stage productions of Phantom popped up all over the place, from Los Angeles to London's West End. When the decision was made to bring it to the screen, director Joel Schumacher took the reigns, guiding Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum, Patrick Wilson, Miranda Richardson, and Minnie Driver. Warner Home Video will release the DVD on May 3rd, presented in widescreen anamorphic video supported by a Dolby Digital 5.1 track. The SRP will be $27.95.
