'Spider-Man 2'; 'Matrix' box; Paramount TV on DVD; 'Daredevil' redux

Webslinger - 11:59pm

Yep, Spidey's back! The blockbuster sequel may still be in the box office top ten, but Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment has wasted no time in announcing a November 30th release for Spider-Man 2. Loaded with over 10 hours of bonus features (too many to list here!), just check out the full press release (www.dvdfile.com/news/web_wire/press_release/index.html) for all the details.

Revolutions - 3:06pm

Neo is back. But the question is, will anyone care? Following the diminishing returns of the two Matrix sequels, Warner Home Video will unleash no less than a ten-disc The Ultimate Matrix Collection on December 7th, featuring all three flicks in one gargantuan box set.

So, what's inside? In additional to brand-new remastered 2.40:1 anamorphic widescreen transfers and Dolby 5.1 surround tracks, supplements include (are you ready?): introduction by the Wachowski Brothers, two audio commentaries on the first film by "The Philosophers" Dr. Cornel West and Ken Wilber, and "The Critics" Todd McCarthy, John Powers and David Thomson, plus two more commentaries apiece on both Reloaded and Revolutions; no less than 71 one new featurettes (21 on the first flick, 29 on the second, and 21 on the third!), 23 additional scenes filmed for "Enter the Matrix" video game, the "Roots of the Matrix," "Re: Action - A Brief History of Action in Cinema," "Return To Source - Philosophy & The Matrix" and "The Hard Problem - The Science Behind the Fiction" documentaries, something called "The Burly Man Chronicles," multiple still galleries inside the massive "The Zion Archive" (including conceptual artwork, storyboards, drawings and more), plus music videos, theatrical trailers and TV spots, plus plenty of ROM exclusives to be announced. Retail for this behemoth will be $79.95, and there will also be a Limited Edition Set featuring a Neo mini-bust figurine and 80-page collector's book for $129.95. Sounds like a great stocking stuffer.

Springtime for Hitler - 3:06pm

Just in from Paramount Home Entertainment is another interesting assortment of releases, most of them new TV on DVD titles.

But first up is the Andy Dick comedy The Hebrew Hammer, which will hit stores on November 16th. Presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby 5.1, extras include an audio commentary with the cast, deleted scenes and the trailer. Retail will list for $19.95. Also due on the 16th is the British thriller I'll Sleep When I'm Dead, starring Malcolm McDowell and Clive Owen. Presented in anamorphic widescreen and Dolby 2.0 stereo, extras include a featurette and audio commentary, participants TBA. List price will be $29.95. Last but not least, the 16th will see the release of Richard Pryor: I Ain't Dead Yet, #*%$@!! - Uncensored. Boasting over 30 minutes of extended interview footage with Dave Chappelle, Denis Leary, Jennifer Lee Pryor and Chris Rock, the disc features a 4:3 full screen transfer and Dolby 2.0 surround track. Retail will be $19.95.

Next up is a bit of out-of-order TV on DVD, Frasier: The Complete Final Season. Due on November 16th, this one is presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1. No extras have yet been announced, but expect a list price of $49.95.

Last but not least, Paramount has announced street dates for the remaining Star Trek Voyager season sets, the entire series being released by the end of the year. Full specs are not yet available, aside from the usual 4.3 full screen transfers, Dolby Digital 5.1 surround remasters and host of featurettes. But watch for Season Five on November 9th, Season Six on December 7th, and Season Seven on December 21st. Retail will cost you a suggested $129.95 a pop.

Man in Tights - 3:06pm

Last but not least, at last announced is the much rumored Daredevil: Director's Cut, which Fox Home Entertainment will release on November 30th. Boasting over 20 minutes of additional footage, the flick will be presented in 2.40:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1, and extras include a new audio commentary by director Mark Steven Johnson and Avi Arad and "The Making of the Director's Cut" featurette. Retail will set you back a mere $19.95, and note that the current theatrical version will remain on the market.
