'Against the Ropes'; Universal TV on DVD; Columbia unleashes 'Skeleton of Cadavra' SE

Ringside Seat - 3:43pm

In another recent disappointment for star Meg Ryan, last winter's boxing drama Against the Ropes was her biggest bomb since Amityville 3-D, taking in less than $10 million at the domestic box office despite plenty of hype. Hoping to give the Charles Dutton-directed flick another shot on video, Paramount Home Entertainment will release the DVD on July 13th. Available in separate anamorphic widescreen and full screen versions, each comes with a Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track, the "A Ringside Seat" and "Queen Of The Ring: Jackie Kallen, Then & Now" featurettes, and theatrical trailers. Retail will list for $29.95.

AutoMan - 3:43pm

Just in from Universal Studios Home Video are two new TV on DVD announcements. Due on August 3rd are two sci-fi cult classics, the David Hasselhoff "classic" Knight Rider: Season One, and the Jerry O'Connell time travel fave Sliders: Seasons 1 & 2. Each is presented in 4:3 full screen, and feature Dolby Digital mono and 2.0 surround tracks, respectively. Fans will have to go without extras, but retail will be $59.95 for the four-disc Knight Rider set, and $89.95 for the Sliders six-disc extravaganza.

Skeleton Key - 3:43pm

Rounding out today's news is the latest from Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment. Hitting DVD on June 15th is the Donna Reed classic Hangman's Knot, which is presented in its original 1.33:1 full screen and Dolby mono. There are no extras, and list price will go for $19.95. Columbia will also release a Superbit version of Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down on the 15th. In keeping with the Superbit tradition, the 148-minute flick will be spread across two discs and be presented in anamorphic widescreen with Dolby Digital and DTS surround tracks. There are no extras, and retail will be $26.95.

Next up on the 22nd is "The Supreme Shock Classics of Our Time!", the cult fave The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra. Columbia will give this one the special edition treatment, presenting it in "Skeletorama" (aka groovy anamorphic widescreen) and Dolby 2.0 stereo, along with both a director and cast and "Character" audio commentaries, an "American Cinematheque Q&A" and "Obey The Lost Skeleton" featurettes, a "Skeleton Frolic" short film, a still gallery and trailers. Retail will be $24.95. Rounding out Columbia's catalog lineup on the 22nd is the Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson drama Songwriter, which gets the remastered anamorphic widescreen treatment, a Dolby 2.0 surround soundtrack, and bonus trailers. List price will be $19.95.
