'House of Sand and Fog'; Fox April musicals; Warner Hammer horrors

The stream of Oscar hopefuls continues with the latest contender to get a DVD announcement, the dark dram The House and Sand and Fog. DreamWorks Home Entertainment will give this one a rather speedy trip to video, debuting the Ben Kingsley and Jennifer Connelly starrer on March 30th, only a little more than three months since its theatrical bow. PResented in anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1, extras include an audio tracks. Bonus materials include an audio commentary by director Vadim Perelman, novelist Andre Dubus III and Kingsley, five deleted scenes, Oscar nominee Shoreh Aghdashloo's audition tape, a featurette and trailers. Retail will be $26.95.

House of Horrors - 1:18pm

Just in from Warner Home Video is a collection of six Hammer horror greats - three reissues, three new ones. On April 17th comes the chillers Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed, Dracula Has Risen from the Grave and Taste the Blood of Dracula, all newly remastered in anamorphic widescreen with English and French Dolby mono tracks. There are no announced extras, and retail will be $19.95 a pop. Warner will also release a six-disc box set The Hammer Horror Collection, which includes the above three titles plus the previously-released The Curse of Frankenstein, Horror of Dracula and The Mummy. Retail will be $66.95.

Rounding out today's news is the latest batch of new announcements from Fox Home Entertainment, who will serve up an assortment of classic musicals and more Marilyn Monroe this April. Leading their musical promotion is Robert Wise's Star! on April 20th, a much-maligned would-be epic that still earned a Best Picture nod despite critical scorn. This special edition includes a remastered anamorphic widescreen transfer, Dolby digital 5.1 remix, audio commentary by Wise, the "Star! THe Sound of a Legend" original 1968 featurette, two trailers and three TV spots. Retail will list for a mere $14.95. Also a part of the lineup is Call Me Madam, Roxie Hart and the Paul McCartney musical flop Give My Regards to Broad Street. All include remastered transfers in their original theatrical aspect ratios (Broad Street also includes a separate full screen version), plus trailers and on Call Me Madam, an audio commentary by Miles Krueger. Retail will also run you $14.95 a pop.

Marilyn Monroe fans can look forward to four more of her most beloved favorites on April 20th. The new titles in this third wave include Love Nest, Let's Make it Legal, As YOung as You Feel and We're Not Married. All are newly remastered in their original theatrical aspect ratios and Dolby 2.0 stereo, and include trailers and restoration comparisons. Retail will be $14.95 each.

Last but not least, Fox will release another wave of $9.95 super-cheapy B-titles on April 20th. The classics include Circuit 2, Detonator, A Good Night to Die, Wasted, Windfall, Killer Buzz, Phase IV and Stranded. Each is in full screen only and include no extras. Try to quell your excitement..
