Kicking things off is the latest batch of announcements from
Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment, all due on April 6th. Among
the goodies is the recent theatrical release Passionada,
presented in anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround,
and with two audio commentaries with the director and cast, and
the writers and producers, deleted scenes, an alternate ending
and the theatrical trailer. Retail will be $24.95. New to DVD
are three Columbia catalog faves: Albert Finney in The
Dresser, the horse drama Sylvester with
Melissa Gilbert, and Patrick Swayze in City of Joy.
All three are (for once) presented in remastered anamorphic widescreen
and Dolby 2.0 surround, although the only extras are trailers.
Retail lists for $24.95 a pop. And from the neverending television
vaults comes The Best of the Muppets Show - Diana Ross
and (woo-hoo!) Charlie's Angels - The Complete Second
Season. All are presented in 4:3 full screen and mono
and include no extras aside from basic episode synopses and airdate
info. Retail will set you back $19.95 for the Muppets set and
$49.95 for the Angels.
And also just announced from Columbia TriStar is a March 23rd
debut for the new Booty Call: The Bootiest Edition,
which certainly must win the award for silliest DVD title of all
time. This new reissue includes a remastered anamorphic widescreen
transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track, an audio commentary
with director Jeff Pollack, writers Takashi Bufford and Bootsie
(really), and actors Jamie Foxx, Vivica Fox and Tommy Davidson),
the "Smooth Operator" documentary, an alternate ending
and theatrical trailers. Retail will cost your booty a mere $24.95.
War Stories - 10:01pm
Just in from MGM Home Entertainment is their May lineup. In addition
to a new special edition of The Good, The Bad and the
Ugly (see the January 25th update
for the full details), also getting the special edition treatment
on May 18th is the war classic The Great Escape.
This 60th Anniversary Edition is remastered in anamorphic widescreen
and Dolby 5.1, and includes three documentaries totaling two hours,
an additional four featurettes hosted by Burt Reynolds and originally
produced for The History Channel, an audio commentary created
from archival interviews, a subtitle trivia track, a still gallery
and the theatrical trailer. Retail for this two-disc set will
be $29.95.
Due on April 20th is the latest from indie darling John Sayles,
the drama Casa de los Babys. This special edition
includes an anamorphic widescreen transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1
surround, an audio commentary with Sayles, three featurettes and
the theatrical trailer. Retail will be $29.95. April 20th also
sees the direct-to-DVD debut of the family comedy Recipe
for Disaster, starring John Larroquette and Lesley Ann
Warren. Presented in 4:3 full screen and Dolby 5.1, there are
no extras, and retail will set you back $25.95.
Rounding out MGM's latest announcements is the critically-acclaimed
series Dead Like Me: The Complete First Season,
which hits shelves on May 14th. PResented in 1.78:1 anamorphic
widescreen and Dolby 5.1, extras include an audio commentary with
the cast on the first episode, 32 deleted scenes, two featurettes,
a still gallery and "The Yearbook," a text-based series
of character obituaries. Retail for this six-disc set will be
$58.95.
Office

Rounding out today's news is the arrival of the Golden Globe-collecting
favorite The Office: The Complete Second Season.
Warner Home Video will release the set on April 20th., which features
a 1.78:1 anamorphic transfers and Dolby Digital 2.0 surround tracks,
plus plenty of extras including a video diary, deleted scenes,
outtakes and personnel files. Retail will be $24.95.
More TV on DVD from Warner includes Sex and the City:
Season Six - Part One (yep, you are going to have to
buy the show's farewell season in two parts). This 3-disc set
includes the first 12 episodes ("To Market, To Market"
through "One"), each presented in 4:3 full screen and
Dolby 2.0 surround. Extras include an audio commentary with executive
producer Michael Patrick King and a Museum of TV and Radio Seminar
featuring King and all four of the series' stars. Retail will
be $49.95.
