Quentin Tarantino's latest ode to B-movie exploitation, the bloody
Kill Bill Vol. 1 will street on April 13th, just
in time for the theatrical premiere of the second installment
of this cinematic two-parter. Buena Vista Home Entertainment will
present the film in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital
and DTS 5.1, plus the "Behind the Scenes with Quentin Tarantino"
documentary and trailers. Retail is $29.95, and Tarantino has
already revealed in published interviews that a full-fledged box
set with both films, jammed with extras, will be released at a
later date. Watch this space...
And keep it on the QT and very hush hush, but due on January
27th is a new special edition of Danny DeVito's gangster drama
Hoffa. (In fact, this one was so secret Buena
Vista never seemed to even have issued a press release.) This
one includes a new 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, Dolby
Digital 5.1 surround track, an audio commentary by DeVito, excised
scenes, the "Personal Anecdotes from Members of the Teamster's
Union" and "Special Shots" featurettes, storyboards
of "The Early Days" and "The Later Days,"
historical news coverage of the real Hoffa, footage of a first
script read-through, the complete shooting script, reviews, and
trailers. Retail is $19.95.

Just in from Paramount Home Entertainment is a March 23rd release
for Beyond Borders the Clive Owen and Angelina
Jolie mega-bomb. This special edition includes a 2.35:1 anamorphic
transfer, Dolby 5.1 surround track, an audio commentary with director
Martin Campbell and producer Lloyd Phillips, the documentary "Behind
The Lines" and "Angelina: Goodwill Ambassador"
and "The Writing Of Beyond Borders" featurettes, and
trailers. Retail will be set at $29.95.
Also just announced from Paramount is the Keith Gordon update
of the British classic The Singing Detective,
starring Robert Downey Jr. and Mel Gibson. Due on March 23rd,
the disc includes an anamorphic widescreen transfer, Dolby Digital
5.1 surround track, commentary by Gordon, and the theatrical trailer.
Retail will cost you $29.95. And due on April 6th are three more
classics: The Greatest Show on Earth, presented
in 1.33: 1 full screen and Dolby Digital mono; The Little
Prince, jazzed up in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and
Dolby Digital 2.0 surround; and Half a Sixpence,
also in anamorphic widescreen and 2.0 surround. Retail will be
$14.95 a pop.

Rounding out today's news is a speedy DVD debut for the Julia
Roberts comedy-drama Mona Lisa Smile, which failed
to light up the box office. Due on March 9th, Columbia TriStar
Home Entertainment will present the film in 2.35:1 anamorphic
widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1, and include the featurettes
"Art Forum," "College Then and Now" and "What
Women Wanted: 1953," Elton John's "The Heart of Every
Girl" music video and theatrical trailers. Retail will be
$28.95.
