Just in from Fox Home Entertainment are a spate of new announcements
and street date changes. At last making its debut on March 16th
is a special edition reissue of the Alan Parker cult classic The
Commitments. This two-disc set boasts a 1.85:1 anamorphic
widescreen transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, plus an
audio commentary by Parker, the full-length "The Commitments:
Looking Back" and "The Making of The Commitments"
documentaries, an additional "Dublin Soul: The Working Class
& Changing Face of Dublin" featurette, a "Treat
Her Right" music video plus "Before the Next Tear Drop
Falls" and "Taking on the World" original songs,
a still gallery, and promotional materials including the theatrical
trailer, six TV spots and four radio spots. Retail will be $26.95.
Fox will also unleash the direct-to-video chiller Hangman's
Curse on March 30th. This double-sided special edition
includes 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen and 1.44:1(?) full screen
versions, plus the "Frank Peretti: From Page to Screen"
and "The Spider Wrangler: The Spiders of Hangman's Curse"
featurettes and trailers. Retail is $29.95.
Rounding out Fox's latest announcements is a March 9th debut
for The Raquel Welch Collection, a box set of
her most beloved (and campy) classics: Bandolero!,
Mother Jugs & Speed, One Million
Years B.C., and what is widely considered to be one of
the worst movies of all time, the infamous Myra Breckinridge.
Each is newly remastered in anamorphic widescreen and stereo,
and all include the "Raquel Welch Theatre" trailer assortment,
and Myra Breckinridge also includes two audio commentaries with
director Michael Sarne and the other with Welch, the AMC Backstory
featurette and additional teaser trailers and TV spots. Retail
is $14.95 a pop for each of the individual titles, and $49.95
for the box set, which will also include the Welch spy thriller
Fathom, which is already available.
And if all of this camp isn't already enough for you, on April
20th Fox will also release the "incendiary" and "controversial"
laugh riot Reefer Madness. Long in the public
domain, this remastered reissue boasts both the original black
and white and newly colorized versions, both in 1.33:1 full screen,
plus restored Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 tracks (really, no joke!),
plus audio commentaries by Mike Nelson of "Mystery Science
Theater 3000" and the Legend Films Color design team (on
the colorized version only), and the rare short film "Grandpra's
Marijuana Handbook." Retail will be a mere $14.95 for this
epic release.
Last but not least, Fox has also announced two street date changes:
In Living Color: Season One has been bumped to
April 6th, while the hit Paris Hilton reality series The
Simple Life gets moved up one week to January 20th to
meet all the demand. (I weep for the future.) Specs and prices
remain the same.
Inside the Labyrinth - 5:57pm
On March 30th, New Line Home Entertainment will release Ripley's
Game, which marks the return of one of the most prolific
serial killers of the 20th century. (No, not Leatherface.) This
little-seen sequel to the 1999 hit The Talented Mr. Ripley sees
John Malkovich taking over for Matt Damon as an older but no less
deadly Tom Ripley, and will make its debut here in North America
as a direct-to-video release. The DVD will be a bare bones affair,
with only a 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 surround
track and trailers. Retail is $27.95. You can check out the box
art below, as well as a look at the special two-disc Platinum
Series edition of the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, also
due on March 30th. Mmmmm...fresh meat!
Angels in America - 5:57pm
Rounding out today's news is Buena Vista Home Entertainment's
April 6th lineup of new catalog releases, a diverse slate of hits
and misses, family fare and adult dramas. The nine titles in the
wave are all featureless aside from trailers and the obligatory
Buena Vista sneak peeks, and will retail at two price points.
Listing for $14.95: Blaze, Feast of July
and the Goldie Hawn thriller Deceived; and listing
for $19.95: Angels in the Endzone and Angels
in the Infield, Before and After, Jefferson
in Paris, A Pyromaniac's Love Story
and the 1963 sequel Son of Flubber. Aspect ratio
information is not yet available, but stay tuned.
