'Secondhand Lions'; Warner foreign classics, 'Thorn Birds'; 'Bring it On Again'
Born Free - 6:56pm

Kicking off today's news is the announcement of the fall sleeper Secondhand Lions, starring a trio of Oscar nominees (and two Oscar winners) Michael Caine, Robert Duvall and Haley Joel Osment. New Line Home Entertainment will release the hit on February 3rd as a Platinum Series edition, complete with anamorphic widescreen and full screen transfers, a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround EX track, an audio commentary by director Tim McCanlies, deleted and alternate scenes (with optional commentary), the "Secondhand Lions: One Screenplay's Wild Ride in Hollywood" documentary and "On The Set with Secondhand Lions" and "Haley Joel Osment: An Actor Comes of Age" featurettes, a visual effects comparisons, trailers, and ROM extras including a screenplay viewer. Retail will be $27.95.

Also just announced for a February 10th release is the DVD debut of the John Landis comedy The Stupids, starring Tom Arnold. This bare bones release includes 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and 4:3 full screen transfers, Dolby 5.1 and 2.0 surround tracks, and the trailer. Retail will be a cheap $14.95.

If There Be Thorns - 6:56pm

Just in from Warner Home Video is the announcement of a trio of foreign classics, all making their DVD debuts on February 17th. The three titles included in the promotion include the Michelangelo Antonioni classic Blowup, Luchino Visconti's Death in Venice and The Damned. Each will be presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and mono, and the only extras will be trailers. Retail will set you back $19.95 a pop.

Also making its DVD world premiere on February 3rd is the classic melodrama The Thorn Birds. One of the highest-rated miniseries in television history, this two-disc set will include the entire 476 epic presented in its original 4:3 full screen aspect ratio and English mono. There will be no extras, and retail is set at $29.95.

Pom Pom Girls - 6:56pm

Rounding out today's news are three (or two-and-a-half) new announcements from Universal Studios Home Video. Hitting DVD on January 20th is the indie hit Swimming Pool, which will be made available in R-rated and Unrated versions. Each is presented in anamorphic widescreen with Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks, plus deleted scenes and outtakes, a still gallery and theatrical trailers. Either version will cost you $26.95.

And after months of cheesy trailers on just about every other Universal DVD released, the direct-to-video sequel Bring It On Again will finally hit shelves on January 20th. Presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1, extras include the "You're On The Set ...The Making of Bring It On Again" and "Tony G's Cheer Dos and Cheer Don'ts" featurettes, deleted scenes and an alternate opening, a "Pop-Up Video" commentary with the cast, a " Cheer Along From the Original Bring It On" guide and trailers. Retail will be set at $26.95.
