Kicking off today's news is the announcement of the fall sleeper
Secondhand Lions, starring a trio of Oscar nominees
(and two Oscar winners) Michael Caine, Robert Duvall and Haley
Joel Osment. New Line Home Entertainment will release the hit
on February 3rd as a Platinum Series edition, complete with anamorphic
widescreen and full screen transfers, a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround
EX track, an audio commentary by director Tim McCanlies, deleted
and alternate scenes (with optional commentary), the "Secondhand
Lions: One Screenplay's Wild Ride in Hollywood" documentary
and "On The Set with Secondhand Lions" and "Haley
Joel Osment: An Actor Comes of Age" featurettes, a visual
effects comparisons, trailers, and ROM extras including a screenplay
viewer. Retail will be $27.95.
Also just announced for a February 10th release is the DVD debut
of the John Landis comedy The Stupids, starring
Tom Arnold. This bare bones release includes 1.85:1 anamorphic
widescreen and 4:3 full screen transfers, Dolby 5.1 and 2.0 surround
tracks, and the trailer. Retail will be a cheap $14.95.
If There Be Thorns - 6:56pm
Just in from Warner Home Video is the announcement of a trio
of foreign classics, all making their DVD debuts on February 17th.
The three titles included in the promotion include the Michelangelo
Antonioni classic Blowup, Luchino Visconti's
Death in Venice and The Damned.
Each will be presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and mono,
and the only extras will be trailers. Retail will set you back
$19.95 a pop.
Also
making its DVD world premiere on February 3rd is the classic melodrama
The Thorn Birds. One of the highest-rated miniseries
in television history, this two-disc set will include the entire
476 epic presented in its original 4:3 full screen aspect ratio
and English mono. There will be no extras, and retail is set at
$29.95.

Rounding out today's news are three (or two-and-a-half) new announcements
from Universal Studios Home Video. Hitting DVD on January 20th
is the indie hit Swimming Pool, which will be
made available in R-rated and Unrated versions. Each is presented
in anamorphic widescreen with Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks,
plus deleted scenes and outtakes, a still gallery and theatrical
trailers. Either version will cost you $26.95.
And after months of cheesy trailers on just about every other
Universal DVD released, the direct-to-video sequel Bring
It On Again will finally hit shelves on January 20th.
Presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1,
extras include the "You're On The Set ...The Making of Bring
It On Again" and "Tony G's Cheer Dos and Cheer Don'ts"
featurettes, deleted scenes and an alternate opening, a "Pop-Up
Video" commentary with the cast, a " Cheer Along From
the Original Bring It On" guide and trailers. Retail will
be set at $26.95.
