'Uptown Girls'; 'Mommy & Me' comes to DVD; new D-VHS
Class & Manners - 12:48pm

Kicking off today's news is the latest from MGM Home Entertainment. Due for release on December 30th is the Brittany Murphy and Dakota Fanning comedy Uptown Girls, which will get the 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1 treatment, plus the "Lowdown on Uptown" and "Rockin' Style" featurettes, deleted scenes, a video still gallery and trailers. Retail is $26.95.

MGM has also announced their February lineup of catalog titles - specs are not yet available, but will be announced in the coming weeks. At last getting the special edition treatment is the 1988 Oscar winner for Best Picture, Rain Main, which will retail for $19.95. MGM will also debut special editions of five Ingmar Bergman classics: Hour of the Wolf, The Passion of Anna, Persona, The Serpent's Egg and Shame. Retail will set your back $24.95 each. The studio's World Films collection will also grow with five additional new titles: La Chamade, the Gerard Depardieu interpretation Cyrano de Bergerac, That Championship Season, The Myster of Rampo and Together. Considerably more low-brow is another great batch of B-movie action favorites: Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold, King Solomon's Mines, Death Wish 2, 3 and 4, Roadhouse 66, X-15 and Paul Verhoeven's Flesh + Blood. Retail is $14.95 a pop.

DVD & Me - 12:48pm

Destined to become a "family entertainment staple," on January 20 Universal Studios Home Video will release the first two titles in the Mommy & Me series, Playgroup Favorites and More Playgroup Favorites. These wildly popular playgroups attract over four million parents and their kids each week with their interactive, unique "together time" concept and wide range of educational benefits. Each Mommy & Me title features 11 of the best-known classic children's songs and three new original songs, each introduced by charming animated interstitials. Each DVD will be priced at $19.95.

X-VHS - 12:48pm

In their continuing efforts to push the fledging D-VHS format, Fox Home Entertainment has just announced a quintet of new titles, including two day & date with DVD and VHS blockbusters. On November 25th comes X2: X-MEN United, plus the Oscar-winning Moulin Rouge! Then on December 16th comes three action smashes: True Lies, Speed and The League of Extraordinary Gentleman. Each is presented in their original 2.35:1 theatrical aspect ratios and, for the first time on D-VHS, feature Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 surround tracks, each encoded at their full bit rates. There are no extras, and retail is $34.95.
