'Open Range,' 'Comic Book Confidential'; 'Star Trek VI'; 'Johnny English'
Have Gun, Will Travel - 12:27pm

You can't keep a good cowboy down. Just when critics thought (hoped?) they could write off the career of Kevin Costner, he returned with Open Range, a back-to-basics western that surprised everyone and grossed over $50 million at the box office. Buena Vista Home Entertainment will release the pic on January 20th as a two-disc set. Presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen with Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks, extras include an audio commentary by Costner, extensive featurettes, deleted scenes, still galleries and trailers. Retail will be set at $29.95.  
 
Next up are two new releases from Miramax. Debuting on December 16th on is the sci-fi chiller Avalon, from Ghost in the Shell helmer Mamoru Ishii. The set comes complete with a 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 track, a Ishii interview, the "Special Effects of Avalon" featurette and trailers. Next is Comic Book: The Movie, a mockumentary from Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill. This two-disc set includes a 4:3 full screen transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track, plus an audio commentary with Hamill and cast, "Four Color Frenzy: The Making Of Comic Book The Movie" and "Behind The Voices" featurettes, deleted scenes and bloopers, additional interviews with Stan Lee, Kevin Smith, High Hefner and Bruce Campbell by "filmmaker Don Swan" (aka Hamill), the "Commander Courage" art gallery and radio show, and trailers. Retail for each will be $29.95.

Just in from Paramount Home Entertainment is the announcement of the sixth and final voyage of the old crew of the Starship Enterprise. On February 27th comes a two-disc special edition of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, will at last complete every Trekkers collection. (Now how about reissuing all those Next Generation movies?) Presented in a newly remastered 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1, extras include director and screenwriter audio commentaries, the "Movie Making," "The Star Trek Universe," "Art Imitates Life" and "A Farewell" featurettes, extensive storyboards and production gallery and theatrical trailers. Retail is $24.95.

Rounding out today's news is the latest from Universal Studios Home Video. First up is the latest Rowan Atkinson comedy Johnny English, which earned a fair $25 million in box office laughs. Due on January 13th in separate anamorphic widescreen and full screen versions, each with Dolby Digital and DTS surround tracks, extras include the "Making of Johnny English" featurette, character profiles, self-defense techniques and ROM extras including a Thunderbirds sneak peek. Arriving a week earlier on January 6th is The Anarchist Cookbook, presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1, along with a commentary and trailers. Retail will set you back $26.95 a pop.
