'Friday the 13th' contest; 'Duel' update; new Blue Underground horrors

Ki-ki-ki, Ma-ma-ma - 12:08pm

You've survived 11 movies (and counting)... but do you think you have what it takes to take on Jason yourself? As the ol' hockey-masked fiend gets ready to do battle with Freddy tomorrow, Cinescape has just announced a super-scary Friday the 13th amateur filmmaker contest. You've got 13 minutes or less to try your hand at "paying tribute to, poking fun at, or having your way with" Jason and the mythology established in the first eight Friday flicks. Deadline for submissions is September 8th, and then on Friday the 19th, the winner will be screened at Maniafest -and better yet for DVD fans, there will be a special midnight screening of the original Friday the 13th complete with a panel discussion beforehand (with very special guests), plus the revealing of official news about the upcoming DVD box set. Check out the Cinescape website (http://www.cinescape.com/0/News_2.asp) for the full scoop.

Ouija board, Ouija board - 12:08pm

How's this for a plot synopsis: "A group of British college students embark on a night of intense partying - including alcohol and drugs - and while under the influence, try to establish a link with the spirit world using a homemade Ouija board." Won't these kids ever learn? Find out the answer on October 28th when Universal Studios Home Video releases the teen horror chiller Long Past Dead. The disc features an anamorphic widescreen transfer, Dolby Digital Surround EX track and minimal extras, only production notes, filmographies and the trailer. Retail is $26.95.

Also, an update on the strange case of Steven Spielberg's Duel. As killer truck fans already know. this one has been announced twice and then pulled at the last minute...only this time, some have snuck through. Originally scheduled for release this week, some retailers received their copies and weren't notified of the delay before it was too late (or decided to sell them anyway), so if you are lucky you may be able to find a copy out their somewhere. According to sources at Universal, this second delay is due to issues surround Spielberg's approval of the set and the transfer, and in any case, the title is not cancelled, just postponed...again. Watch this space for more.
