'It Runs in the Family'; new TV on DVD; Warner October titles

Family affair - 7:54pm

They say blood is thicker than water, which certainly seems to be true in the Douglas household. While it didn't set the box office on fire, MGM Home Entertainment will give the recent Michael Douglas and Kirk Douglas dramedy It Runs in the Family the special edition treatment on October 21st. Featuring an anamorphic widescreen transfer and a Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track, extras include audio commentary by director Fred Schepisi, the "Family Makes you Nuts" and "All that grit: Kirk Douglas and the Movies" featurettes, deleted scenes, a still gallery and the theatrical trailer. Retail is $25.95.

"You'll shoot you're eye out!" - 7:54pm

Next up are a number of announcements from Warner Home Video. On October 28, join the all-star cast of Bugs Bunny, Sylvester, Tweety and Michael Jordan in yet another new version of Space Jam. This two-disc special edition features (at last) remastered anamorphic widescreen and full screen transfers, plus a mix of supplements old and new: an audio commentary by Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and their director Joe Pytka, the new featurette "Jammin' with Bugs Bunny and Michael Jordan," an hour of new-to-DVD cartoons including "Another Froggy Evening," "Invasion of the Bunny Snatchers," "Night of the Living Duck," "The Duxorcist" and "Bugs vs. Daffy Battle of the Music Video Stars!", additional music videos including Seal's "Fly Like an Eagle" and Monstars' anthem "Hit 'Em High" (what, no R. Kelly!?) and ROM extras including a fully playable, multilevel Flash adventure inspired by the Looney Tunes: Back in Action video game. Retail is $26.95.

Next up via HBO Home Video comes two of the best British crime dramas of all time, both streeting on October 14th. Helen Mirren is Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect: Series One , which features the entire 208-minute drama spread over two discs, in 4:3 full screen and Dolby Digital 2.0 surround. Next is Robbie Coltrane in Cracker: The Complete First Season, a three-disc set that also includes 4:3 full screen transfers and Dolby 2.0 surround tracks. Retail is $29.95 and $39.95, respectively. and DD 2.0 audio. Both due on October 14th, Prime Suspect retails $29.98 and Cracker $39.98.

Last but not least, on October 7th Warner will release one of their top special edition request titles in a new two-disc set, the perennial staple A Christmas Story. This Bob Clark classic will at last get a newly remastered 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, and extras are to be announced. Retail is $26.95, and watch this space for more...

You've seen the movie on HBO about twenty million times...now get ready for the TV show! On August 26th, A.D. Vision will release the "acclaimed" series Beastmaster: Season One - The Collection. All 22 episodes are presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 2.0, with the only extras including TV promos and a still gallery. Retail is $69.95. Scary.

Speaking of bad TV, we end today's update with the arrival of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman: Season Two on September 30th from A&E. This deluxe set includes all 24 second season episodes presented in 4:3 full screen and Dolby 2.0 stereo, with extras including audio commentary with star Joe Lando, additional cast and crew interviews, "Boarding House" guest star filmographies, and an awards and honors list. Retail is $109.95.
