'Office,' 'Smallville' sets; 'Bulletproof Monk'; new Director's Label

Just in from Warner Home Video are details on the October 7th debut of the smash BBC comedy The Office: The Complete First Series. This two-disc set includes the entire first season in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby 2.0 stereo, plus extras including the documentary "How I Made The Office," deleted scenes, character biographies and "Slough Slang," a glossary of the characters' idiosyncratic vocabulary. Retail is $29.95.

In other Warner news, Superman fans will finally see the release of Smallville: The Complete First Season on September 23rd. Each episode of this grassroots cult series is presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen and English and French Dolby 2.0 surround, with extras including audio commentaries on the pilot and first episode, deleted scenes from the pilot, an interactive tour of Smallville, a storyboard gallery, TV spots and DVD-ROM weblinks. Retail is $64.95.

In the mood for a little uber-chop socky? On September 9th, MGM Home Entertainment will release Bulletproof Monk, the comedy-slash-action fiesta that failed to ignite at the box office. Featuring a 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer and English 5.1 and French and Spanish 2.0 Dolby surround tracks, extras include two audio commentaries, five "The Tao of Monk" behind-the-scenes featurettes plus "The Monk Unrobed," deleted scenes including an alternate ending, a still gallery and trailers. Retail is $26.95.

Continuing to push boundaries, Palm Pictures has just announced the launch of The Director's Label, a new DVD line celebrating the work of today's most influential filmmakers. The series will kick off in high gear with The Work of Director Spike Jonze on August 26th, a two disc collection of shorts, music videos and commercials. Also included are a ton of extras: the documentaries "Torrance Rises" (in preparation for the landmark 1999 MTV Video Music Awards appearance with Fatboy Slim), "Amarillo By Morning" and "What's Up Fatlip," plus a 52-page book full of never-before-seen photographs, storyboards, drawings and interviews. Retail is $29.95.
