Just in from Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment is another batch
of DVD new release and catalog announcements. Streeting on August
26th is the art house hit Raising Victor Vargas, which
is light on the extras, featuring an anamorphic widescreen transfer
and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track, plus trailers. Also streeting
on the 26th is the drama Levity, featuring an all-star
cast including Morgan Freeman and Holly Hunter. Featuring an anamorphic
widescreen transfer and English and French Dolby Digital 5.1 surround
tracks, extras include an audio commentary with director Ed Solomon
and producer Richard Gladstein and trailers. Retail is $24.95
each.
Also making their DVD debuts are a number of new catalog releases.
From director Robert Rodriquez comes Desperado and El
Mariarchi, each getting a new special edition with remastered
transfers and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround tracks. Both include
audio commentary with Rodriquez, the "Exclusive First Look
at Once Upon a Time in Mexico" and two separate "10-Minute
Film School" featurettes, trailers, and on El Mariarchi,
the short film "Bedhead." Retail is $19.95 each or $26.95
for a value-priced two-pack.
Rounding out Columbia's August 26th catalog lineup are Bingo,
The Devil Commands, Mute Witness and Snowboard
Academy, all in full screen (except Mute Witness, which is
presented in anamorphic widescreen) with only trailers as extras.
Retail is $14.95 each. And from the television vaults comes The
Best of Ripley's Believe It or Not, and Jim Henson's The
Story Teller Collection, which features all nine episodes
of this short-lived anthology series. Both are presented in full
screen and retail for $14.95 and $24.95, respectively.

Time for another batch of announcements from the folks at Anchor
Bay Entertainment, who have another assortment of cult faves and
not-so-classics.
First up is The Cheerleaders Collection, featuring three
B-flicks for fans of pom-poms and T&A: The Cheerleaders,
Revenge of the Cheerleaders and The Swinging Cheerleaders.
All include anamorphic widescreen transfers and mono tracks, plus
trailers, radio spots and a still gallery for each flick, plus
audio commentaries by filmmaker Paul Glickler and writer Ace Baandige
on the first film, ex-cheerleaders Heather Swanson and Lisa Webber
on the second, and director jack Hill and historian Johnny Legend
on the third. Revenge of the Cheerleaders also includes 8 minutes
of behind-the-scenes footage. Retail is $39.95 for the set.
For you Wes Craven fans, at long last comes The Hills Have
Eyes, which has been unavailable on home video for over a
decade and finally makes its DVD debut on September 23rd. This
two-disc set features a newly remastered anamorphic widescreen
transfer and Dolby Digital and DTS remixes, and extras are set
to include audio commentaries with Craven and others, all-new
cast & crew interviews, stills, trailers and more. Retail is $29.95,

Other new Anchor Bay street dates include Xena: Warrior Princess
- Season Two on September 9th, and Dead End Drive In,
Neon Maniacs and Escape 2000, all of which hit stores
on October 21st. The Xena box retails for $89.95, while the rest
