'Bringing Down the House'; get lost in 'La Mancha'; 'Blind Date' attacks; new Home Vision docs

Just in from Buena Vista Home Entertainment is the latest big theatrical blockbuster to get a DVD release date. Coming to a video store near you on August 5th is the Steve Martin and Queen Latifah smash Bringing Down the House. Full specs have not yet been announced, but it is billed as a special edition, so stay tuned for more...

Lost in the woods - 10:20am

Remember...if you're gonna go camping, don't forget your compass and flashlight! Coming to DVD on June 24th from A&E Home Video is the acclaimed documentary Lost in La Mancha, which tracked the failed Terry Gilliam production The Man Who Killed Don Quixote as it literally fell apart in a matter of days. A must for anyone interested in the real story behind what it takes to get a movie made in Hollywood, this extensive two-disc'er is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby 2.0 stereo, with plenty of extras: interviews with the cast and crew, Gilliam's interview with author Salman Rushdie and film critic Elvis Mitchell, deleted scenes, 3 featurettes, "video sound bites," storyboards, a still gallery, filmographies and theatrical trailers. Retail is $29.95.

The attack of reality TV continues, with another sign of the end of civilization as we know it. On June 24th, Universal Home Video will release Blind Date: The Ultimate Uncensored 3-Pack. This triple threat features three full-length sets - Blind Date: Uncensored, Dates From Hell, and Freaks & Weirdos - which were all previously available via direct marketing. All are presented in full frame and 2.0 stereo, and this whole set is essentially one big extra as it is collected highlights from the controversial series. Retail is a mere $29.98.

Rounding out today's news is a trio of new documentary titles from Home Vision, all streeting on May 20th. From cinematic pioneer Robert Flaherty comes Man of Aran and Louisiana Story. Each is presented in newly remastered full screen transfers, plus extras. Man of Aran includes a documentary about the making of the film, footage from "Flaherty and Film" with Frances Flaherty and Robert Gardner, another documentary on Flaherty "Hidden and Seeking," a Flaherty interview, and a still gallery. Louisiana Story includes "Letters Home," a selection of correspondence from cinematographer Richard Leacock to his wife during the production, footage from "Flaherty and Film" and "Hidden and Seeking," an excerpt from "The Land," a short by Flaherty. Retail is $29.95 each.

Rounding out the trio is Israel: A Nation is Born. This three-disc set features new subtitle options in Hebrew, Russian, and Spanish, letters of tribute from world leaders such as Jimmy Carter, Kofi A. Annan, Bill Clinton, and King Abdullah II of Jordan, a 25-year historical timeline from 1978 to the present, a video tribute to Abba Eban featuring Henry Kissinger, Arthur Schlesinger, and Mrs. Abba Eban, and an interview with former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres. Retail is $59.95.
