'Dawson's Creek,' 70s cops; new Fox titles; Lion's Gate Signature additions

DVD is a many-splendored thing - 12:00am

The full specs for Fox Home Entertainment's latest entry in its Studio Classics series has just been announced, the Oscar winner Love is a Many-Splendored Thing. Street on May 6th, this set features a new 2.55:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, restored English 2.0 stereo and English, French and Spanish mono tracks, new audio commentary by Michael Lonzo, Sylvia Stoddard and John Burlingame, two MovieTone News clips ("Audience Awards Presentations" and "Photoplay Awards A Hollywood Highlight"), a restoration comparison, biographies, and theatrical trailers. Retail is $19.95.

And for you X-Files buffs still collecting the series, May 13th will see the release of The X-Files 7: The Complete Seventh Season. Each episode is presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen and English, French and Spanish 2.0 Dolby surround. Extras include audio commentary on the episodes "First Person Shooter," "All Things" and "Je Souhaite," deleted scenes, international clips, the 30-minute documentary "The Truth About Season 7" plus "The X-Files Profiles" featurette, 13 special effects vignettes with commentary by Paul Rabwin, and TV spots. Retail is $149.95.

Just announced from Lion's Gate Home Entertainment are two additions to their new Signature Series line of special edition DVDs. Hitting stores on April 15th are the indie sensation Cube, and Adrian Lyne's controversial remake of Lolita. Cube features an anamorphic widescreen transfer, English Dolby 2.0 surround track, new audio commentary by director Vincenzo Natali, an interview with Nicole deBoer, two featurettes on the set design and special effects, deleted scenes, storyboards, and trailers. Lolita appears to be a reissue of the previous DVD, only with new Signature Series packaging. Extras include audio commentary by director Adrian Lyne, the "On The Set" featurette, a casting session with stars Jeremy Irons and Dominique Swain; behind-the-scenes footage, and trailers. Retail is $19.95 for Cube, and $14.95 for Lolita.

Timed to coincide with the reissue of the original, Lion's Gate will also release Cube 2: Hypercube on the 15th. This one features an anamorphic widescreen transfer, English Dolby 5.1 surround track, audio commentary by producer Ernie Barbaresh and editor Mark Sanders, an interview with director Andrzej Sekula, a making-of featurette, deleted scenes, a storyboard presentation, a still gallery, and the trailer. Retail is $24.95.

Cop rock - 12:00am

Oh, c'mon now, you know you just can't wait until April 1st and the DVD debut of Dawson's Creek: The Complete First Season. Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment will load up this three-disc set with all of the episodes from the show's first (half) season, each presented in 4:3 full screen and Dolby 2.0 surround, plus extras. Goodies include audio commentaries on select episodes by series creator Kevin Williamson and producer Paul Stupin, the retrospective featurette "Dawson's Creek: From Day One," and a "Season One Time Capsule." Retail is $39.95.

And bound to disappoint some looking for full season collections, Columbia TriStar will also release The Greatest 70s Cop Shows, a single-disc "best of" featuring Charlie's Angels, Starsky & Hutch, Police Woman, The Rookies and S.W.A.T. List price is only $19.95, and let's hope this is only a taste of genuine season sets for these classics shows....

Rounding out today's news, Artisan Entertainment has finally announced the specs for the new Young Guns special edition, due to hit stores on April 22nd. Featuring a new anamorphic widescreen transfer, audio options include Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 audio tracks, plus an audio commentary with stars Dermot Mulroney, Lou Diamond Phillips and Casey Siemaszko, the "Billy the Kid" featurette, a “Gunning for the Facts” trivia subtitle track, and trailers. Retail is $19.95.
