'Matrix' redux; new Romero classics; new Anchor Bay cult faves

What is The Matrix? - 12:00am

With the highly-anticipated theatrical debut of The Matrix Reloaded just months away, Warner Home Video will release a newly repackaged two-disc set of The Matrix and The Matrix Revisited on April 29th. This collection is essentially a reissue of the previously-released DVDs, although this new set will include the new sneak peek featurette "Preload: On the Set of Reloaded," promo spots for The Animatrix, "What Is the Game?" and a Reloaded music sampler, plus the Marilyn Manson "Rock Is Dead" music video. And in typical cross-promotion style, this two-disc set will also include a free ticket offer for one to see The Matrix Reloaded. Retail is $27.95.

Fans of The Animatrix can also mark June 3rd on their calendars, will Warner will release the nine short films inspired by the film. Produced by the Wachowski Brothers, these shorts is an animated anthology of sorts from the likes of anime directors such as Yoshiaki Kawajiri, Takeshi Koike, Peter Chung and Andy Jones. This set includes the shorts "Beyond," "Detective Story," "The Final Flight of the Osiris," "Kid's Story," "Matriculated," "Program," "The Second Renaissance Parts 1 & 2," and "World Record." Retail is $24.95.

Romero redux - 12:00am

Just announced from new horror distributor Blue Underground are two George Romero favorites, both making their long-awaited DVD debuts. On July 1st comes The Crazies, presented in 1.66:1 anamorphic widescreen and mono, plus plenty of extras, including an audio commentary with Romero, an interview with actress Lynn Lowry, a still gallery, filmographies, trailers and TV spots. Next up is Romero's collaboration with Italian horror icon Dario Argento, Two Evil Eyes. This two-disc set is a limited edition and features a new 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfers, Dolby Digital EX and DTS ES remixes plus the original 2.0 Dolby surround track, a still gallery, filmographies and trailers. Disc two features the brand-new documentary "Two Masters' Eyes," a look at the "Savini's EFX" plus "At Home with Tom Savini," and an n interview with genre fave Adrienne Barbeau. Retail is $24.95 for The Crazies, and $29.95 for Two Evil Eyes.

Rounding out today's news, Anchor Bay Entertainment has just updated their upcoming releases list with a number of exciting new announcements. Recently added to the "Coming in 2003" list is a new remastered director's cut of Michael Mann's Manhunter, the first-ever DVD release of Wes Craven's classic The Hills Have Eyes, a special edition of Frank Loggia's Fear No Evil, and - at long last - the complete first season of Xena: Warrior Princess.
