Paramount April westerns, DTS; 'ALIEN Quadrilogy' art, 'Secretary,' 'Believer' SEs

Just in from Paramount Home Entertainment comes the specs for their big western lineup hitting stores on April 29th. Presented in anamorphic widescreen and mono are John Wayne in Big Jake, George Peppard and Carroll Baker in The Carpetbaggers, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, The Lonely Man starring Anthony Perkins, and getting new 5.1 remixes, Le Mans, Rio Lobo, Nevada Smith and the classic Little Big Man. Presented in its original 1.37:1 full screen aspect ratio and mono is Copper Canyon. Although none have any extras, not even trailers, retail is a nice price $19.95 each.

Due a week earlier from paramount is the recent acclaimed drama Bloody Sunday, presented in anamorphic widescreen and English Dolby 5.1 surround, plus extras including an audio commentary with director Paul Greengrass, cast and crew interviews, and the trailer. Retail is $24.95.

And in other Paramount news, ever since the studio jumped on the DVD bandwagon many a year ago, home theater enthusiasts have wondered when the mountain would finally, if ever, support DTS. Well, word has come our way that fans may not have to wait much longer. Paramount is cooking up their first DTS title for release soon, although which title exactly will make history remains unknown at press time. Of course, watch this space for more...

Alien to the fourth power - 12:24am

Yikes! What's scarier than one slimy alien with acid for blood and big, sharp, pointy teeth? How about four of them? Fox Home Entertainment has finally revealed a little peek at the upcoming and highly anticipated ALIEN Quadrilogy. While I, for one, am sick of having to buy five thousand versions of the same movie, this 9-disc set(!) does look pretty dang cool. Let's just hope this, finally, is it. Fox has not revealed specs, other than that it will be released in 2003. Needless to say, stay tuned, and click on the image to your right for an enlargement.

While it only received a limited theatrical release, the acclaimed indie sensation Secretary is already generating serious Oscar buzz for breakout star Maggie Gyllenhaal. Studio Entertainment will release the film on April 1st, complete with plenty of extras. Presented in anamorphic widescreen with English and Spanish 5.1 Dolby surround tracks, extras include two audio commentaries with director Steven Shainberg and stars James Spader and Gyllenhaal, deleted scenes, and the trailer. Retail is $24.95.

Rounding out today's news is one of the most controversial films of latest year, the nazi youth drama The Believer. Love it or hate it? Decide for yourself on April 22nd when Trimark releases the film in an extensive special edition. Presented in anamorphic widescreen and Dolby 5.1 surround, extras include an audio commentary by director Henry Bean, the Sundance "Anatomy Of A Scene: The Believer" featurette, a video interview with director Henry Bean, and the trailer. Retail is $24.95.
