'Red Dragon,' more Universal; new Fox war classics
Hannibal returns - 12:00am

Just in from Universal Studios Home Video are a number of new announcements and street dates. While not the "monster" hit like its predecessors The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal, Universal will give Red Dragon no less than three different versions when it is released on April 1st. Available in single-disc anamorphic widescreen and full screen versions, a deluxe widescreen two-disc special edition will also be released. Specs are not yet available, but retail will be $26.95 for either single-disc version and $34.95 for the two-disc set.

On April 1st Universal will also release the Charade remake The Truth About Charlie. Presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen with Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 surround tracks, this two-disc set also includes the complete original theatrical feature film Charade, audio commentary with director Jonathan Demme, a making-of featurette, deleted scenes, and ROM extras to be announced. Retail is $26.95.

Rounding out Universal's new release announcements is Empire, which streets on March 18th. No specs for this one yet, but stay tuned. And for the kiddies, Universal will finally release three more in the popular Land Before Time series, Land Before Time 4: Journey Through the Mists, Land Before Time 5: The Mysterious Island, and Land Before Time 6: Secret of the Saurus Rock. Each is presented in full frame and stereo, with minimal extras, only promo spots and interactive activities. Retail is $24.95 a pop.

For you music video fans, Universal also has a couple of highly-anticipated new titles on tap for February 25th: George Strait: For The Last Time - Live From The Astrodome, Natalie Cole: Ask A Woman Who Knows, and, at long last, Peter Gabriel: Secret World Live. Retail is $19.95 each.

Damn the torpedoes! - 12:00am

Coming this spring from Fox Home Entertainment are eight new classic disaster/war flicks sure to make your home theater seem like D-Day. All will hit stores on May 20th and are presented in their original theatrical aspect ratios, and include trailers: The Blue Max, The Desert Fox, The Enemy Below (includes "The War Situation," "U-Boat Captured By Biplane" and "Inside The German U-boat Base At Lorient, France" MovieTone News clips), 13 Rue Madeleine (includes "Captured Pictures Show How Nazi V-2 Rockey Was Born" MovieTone News clip), Heaven Knows Mr. Allison (includes "Tarawa: Marines Toughest Battle!," "King And Nimitz View Scenes Of Saipan Victory" and "Japs' Raid Saipan" MovieTone News clips), and Sink the Bismark! Retail is $14.95 a pop.

Street on April 29th is a new Son of the Beach three-disc box set. Presented in full frame and 2.0 stereo, extras are plentiful: Audio commentary on "With Sex You Get Eggroll," "Silence Of The Clams," "In The G-Hetto," "East My Muffin," "South Of The Border," "Day Of The Jackass," "Attack Of The Cocktopuss," "Mario Putzo's...The Last Dong"; "BJ Blue Hawaii," "Queefer Madness," "Light My Firebush" and "Chips A Goy," the "Son Of The Beach" and "The Crew Of Son Of The Beach" featurettes, outtakes, montages and trailers. Retail is $39.95.

Last but not least, April 6th will see the debut of the next in Fox's new Classics Series, Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing. Presented in 2.55:1 anamorphic widescreen Dolby 2.0 stereo, extras include audio commentary by Michael Lonzo, Sylvia Stoddard and John Burlingame, a William Holden biography, MovieTone News clips, and trailers. Retail is $19.95.
