Paramount says no to new 'Trek 5' cut; Osbournes' arrive; Fox sci-fi trio

Star Trek redux - 12:00am

Bad news for Trek fans. According to a new interview with Star Trek V helmer Michael Myers, er, William Shatner over at IGN (http://filmforce.ign.com/articles/377/377798p1.html), Paramount has nixed a possible new director's cut of the oft-panned The Final Frontier. While rumors brewed that Paramount might grant Shatner the opportunity to go back and revisit his sole directorial Trek outing with a recut and possible new footage, according to Kirk himself, Paramount "wouldn't let me have it." While a two-disc collector's set of the film is still due out next year, expect it to include the theatrical cut only. Stay tuned for more details...

Just announced from Buena Vista Home Entertainment are the full specs for the long-awaited The Osbournes: The First Season, making its DVD debut on March 4th. This two-disc set will include all 10 uncensored episodes plus four never-before-seen bonus episodes, all presented in 4:3 full screen and Dolby Digital 2.0 surrounds. Extras include additional footage not shown during the original MTV broadcasts, audio commentary on select episodes, the "Ozzy Translator - Decode the Prince of Darkness" subtitles, a "Too Oz For TV" blooper reel, each family member's picks for "Top Moments" clips, plus "Conversations with the Osbournes," two set-top games (including Osbournes Bingo!), a 5-minute scene editing feature, and DVD-ROM extras to be announced. Retail is $29.99.

Back to the future - 12:00am

Attention sci-fi fans! Fox Home Entertainment has three much beloved classics on tap for a March 4th release. First up is the Robert Wise classic The Day the Earth Stood Still. Featuring a newly remastered transfer in its original 1.33:1 full screen aspect ratio and English, French and Spanish mono tracks, this double-sided disc includes many extras. Side one features an audio commentary by Robert Wise and Nicolas Meyer, a "MovieTone News" clip of the premiere, and the theatrical trailer; Side two includes "The Making The Earth Stand Still" documentary, a restoration comparison, 6 still galleries and trailers for other Fox sci-fi flicks. Retail is only $19.95.

Also due on March 4th is Jean Jacques Arnaud's Quest for Fire, presented in a new anamorphic widescreen transfer and 2.0 Dolby surround. Extras include an audio commentary by Arnaud and cast members Michael Gruskoff, Ron Pearlman and Rae Dawn Chong, the original 1982 "Quest For Fire Adventure" featurette, no less than 15 still galleries with commentary by Arnaud, and the trailer. Rounding out this sci-fi trio is Journey to the Center of the Earth, which is relatively bare bones. Features include a new 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer and mono tracks, a restoration comparison, and trailers. Retail is but $14.95 each.
