MGM's December catalog slate; 'Stuart Little 2,' more Columbia; new Image November titles
Springtime for Hitler - 12:00am

You've seen the smash Broadway play, now see the movie that inspired it! MGM has announced another gigantic wave of classic catalog gems due this December, their final slate for 2002. Leading the pack is the long-awaited 12/3 bow of The Producers, the classic Mel Brooks comedy that many still proclaim as the funniest movie ever made. Presented in a brand-new anamorphic widescreen transfer and English 5.1 Dolby surround (the film's original mono mix is also included), extras include a new hour-long documentary, deleted scenes, a still gallery, and trailers. Retail is $24.95.

Also due on 12/3 is another wave of MGM cheapie $14.95 titles, starring my vote for the funniest movie of all time, Madonna's legendary Body of Evidence. This one features both R-rated and Unrated versions of the film presented in anamorphic widescreen and 2.0 Dolby surround. Other great catalog faves in this batch of thrillers include Alphabet City, Blue Steel, Miami Blues, Rush, State of Grace, Dead of Winter, Bad Influence, Company Business and The Whistle Blower. All include both anamorphic widescreen and full screen transfers, 2.0 Dolby surround tracks, and trailers, except Rush and State of Grace, which are widescreen only and also include 5.1 surround tracks.

But wait, there's more. MGM has even more classics on tap for 12/3, all making their first-ever DVD bows: Marlene Dietrich: Her Own Song, The Children's Hour, the 1956 version of A Kiss Before Dying, Where's Poppa?, The Thief of Bagdad, Legend of the Lost, and Bob Hope in The Road to Hong Kong. All feature anamorphic widescreen transfers and mono tracks, except Thief of Bagdad, which is full screen only. Extras include trailers and production notes, and retail is $19.95 each.

Mouse in the house - 12:00am

Joining a more and more packed fourth quarter feeding frenzy, Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment has announced a 12/10 street date for Stuart Little 2, the big bucks sequel that only performed so-so at the box office this past summer. Featuring both widescreen and full screen transfers, an audio commentary, and multiple making-of featurettes, check out the press release for the full specs.

Columbia has also announced a new batch of catalog releases hitting DVD this December. 12/3 sees the release of the Chinese import Happy Times, presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and Mandarin 5.1 surround, with the only extras bonus trailers. Also debuting on 12/3 is My Girl 2, presented in full frame only, with English, French and Portuguese 2.0 Dolby surround tracks and bonus trailers. Last but not least we have the Sharon Stone and Dylan McDermott thriller Where Sleeping Dogs Lie, presented in anamorphic widescreen, English and French 2.0 Dolby surround, and bonus trailers as extras. Retail is $24.95 a pop.
