'Glengarry,' 'Monterey Pop' specs; new D-VHS; street date alert for 'Stuart Little 2'

At long last, Artisan has announced the full specs for the long-awaited special edition of David Mamet's Glengarry GlenRoss. This two-disc set features new anamorphic widescreen and pan & scan transfers, Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 surround tracks, an audio commentary by director James Foley, The "Real-Estate Scams" documentary; a Jack Lemmon tribute featurette, cast and filmmaker interviews, stills, trailers, and more. Retail is $29.95, and street date 11/19.

Artisan has also announced a postponement of the Stargate: Ultimate Edition, originally due this October. No new date has been announced, but stay tuned...

Pop goes the world - 12:01am

Just in from Criterion are the full specs for The Complete Monterey Pop Collection, a new 3-disc set that should prove to be the definitive collection of D.A. Pennebaker's classic documentary. Arriving on 11/17, the set boasts an extensive amount of extras, including nearly two hours of additional rare performances, audio commentaries by Pennebaker and festival producer Lou Adler on "Monterey Pop," Jimi Hendrix biographer Charles Shaar Murray on "Jimi Plays Berkeley," and music critic Peter Guralnick on "Shake! Otis At Monterey," a new 2001 video interview with Adler and Pennebaker, an additional video interview with Phil Walden, manager of Otis Redding, audio interviews with John Phillips, publicist Derek Taylor, Cass Elliott, and David Crosby, a still gallery, the original theatrical trailer, and extensive liner notes and deluxe packaging. Retail is $79.95.

Street date alert - 12:01am

Rounding out this week's news, Columbia has just announced a 12/10 street date for the summer sequel Stuart Little 2, with the direct-to-video sequel Trois 2: Pandora's Box due a week later on 12/17. Stay tuned for specs.

Just announced from Rhino are three new box sets sure to please fans. On 10/22 comes Gigantor Box One, a four-disc set containing 26 uncut episodes in numerical order based on airdate, plus extras including an interview with writer, director and producer Fred Ladd, a Ladd commentary, and a still gallery. Up next is a 11/17 arrival for Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection One, the first-ever DVD boxed set of the famed cult series. This collection includes "the top fan-requested episodes, featuring the films Catalina Caper, The Creeping Terror, Bloodlust, and Skydivers," plus four original feature films without MST3K commentary, as well as the original trailers from three of the features. Last but not least is Transformers Season 2 - Part 1, a collection of the first 24 episodes of the second season, with extras to be announced. Retail is $59.95 for each set, and Rhino has also announced that they will be releasing further box sets of these series in 2003.

Last but not least, Fox has just announced three new D-VHS titles for release on 10/1: Behind Enemy Lines, Fight Club and Men of Honor. Each will be released in their original theatrical aspect ratios with 5.1 and 2.0 Dolby surround tracks, and retail is $34.95 a pop. Fox has also announced 1/31/2003 discontinuation date for The ALIEN Legacy box set. Retailers can continue to sell their remaining quantities until depleted, but no additional orders can be placed after that date. Sources say Fox has already begun work on new editions of the classic sci-fi films, but no official announcement or details have been released so far. Stay tuned!
