Michael Myers returns; 'PowerPuff Girls' arrive; new HD-DVD spec?
Trick or treat - 12:02am

Michael, Michael, Michael, can't you just give it up already? How many more people do you have to kill? Even the best slashers knew when to call it a day, but apparently not the producers of the Halloween pictures, who keep churning out these puppies to gullible fans (like me) who pay to see 'em. On 12/10 Michael Myers once again comes home in Halloween Resurrection, featuring Busta Rhymes kicking some serious Myers behind. This special edition includes a 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 surround tracks, audio commentary and deleted scenes, never-before-seen "Dangertainment" video-cam footage shot by the actors, and the trailer. (While early reports indicated that the "Dangertainment" footage would be accessible during the film via the multi-angle function, no details have yet been released, but stay tuned.) Retail is $29.95.

PowerPuff powers, activate! - 12:02am

Unable to parlay their small screen success into big box office, perhaps The PowerPuff Girls Movie will have better luck when it invades home video on 11/5? Presented in separate theatrical and "Clean" versions, extras include an audio commentary with the filmmakers, new "cast interviews" with the animated characters from the film, deleted scenes with commentary, two featurettes, additional behind-the-scenes footage, and a "Dexter's Laboratory" short. DVD-ROM extras include four interactive games, a screensaver and wallpaper. Retail is $26.95 each.

Two shades of Blu - 12:02am

It's just like American Idol! Who will America chose? Red laser? Blue laser? Justin Guarini!? (Please, nooooo!!!!) The HD-DVD quagmire has just gotten even more sticky, with the joint announcement late last week by NEC and Toshiba of yet another potential new HD-DVD platform.

Based on now near-mythical blue laser technology, unlike the Blu-Ray disc, a competing spec heralded by a number of other major manufacturers earlier this year, this one would work with existing DVD replication infrastructures, making it potentially more attractive to producers and content suppliers.

Will this new wrinkle in the race to HD-DVD speed things up, or just slow them down? Who will be the new HD-DVD American Idol!? Keep the phone lines open, and in the meantime, check out Video Business for more.

Street date alert - 12:02am

Rounding out today's news, Unviersal has just announced a new street date for the Hugh Grant comedy About a Boy. The new date is 12/24, over two months past the originally announced 10/22 street date. Features and pricing remain the same.
