More 'Star Wars,' 'Baretta' lives!, new music titles

Widescreen Wars - 12:01am

Every saga has a beginning, and every saga ultimately gets... panned & scanned? Just in time for the 11/17 debut of Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Fox will also release new full screen editions of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Previously only available in widescreen on DVD, these new pan & scan versions will also be available in two flavors, with either alternate French or Spanish 2.0 Dolby surround and subtitle tracks. So, now all you young Jedis out there have four options of each flick to choose from of each flick (widescreen French or Spanish, or pan & scan French or Spanish). Retail and extras are the same for each.

The big lockdown - 12:01am

Even I couldn't think of anything this tacky. With Robert Blake about to stand trial for murder, Universal has decided to release Baretta: Season One, a three-disc set featuring all 12 episodes of Blake's popular 70's cop drama, and The Best of Baretta, and a single-disc compilation of his finest moments. What timing, eh? Both these sets feature every episode in full frame and 2.0 mono, with no extras. Retail is $39.95 for the Season One collection, and $19.95 for his greatest hits.

Pop Muzik - 12:01am

It's been a while since we've had any good music announcements, so here are some upcoming titles to feed your DVD jukebox this holiday season. On tap from Universal Music are Die Frau Ohne Schatten: Richard Strauss: Georg Solti, Un Ballo In Maschera: Verdi: Metropolitan Opera, and Simon Boccanegra: Verdi: Metropolitan Opera (all 9/10), plus Brenda K. Starr: All Time Greatest Hits and Tricky: A Ruff Guide (both 9/17), and Raffi: Raffi In Concert (9/24). Retail is $19.95 a pop, and there are no extras, save for a new 52-minute documentary and additional poems on the Tricky disc.

From Pioneer comes a quartet of new titles, all due on 10/1: Ringo & His All-Starr Band, Mihoshi Special & Pretty Sammy OVA, Genesis: The Way We Walk - Live In Concert, and Come Together: A Night For John Lennon's Words And Music. All are presented in full frame and 2.0 stereo, with no extras. Retail is $19.95 a pop.

Finally, from BMG on 9/24 comes Neil Young: Rust Never Sleeps, and on 9/10 from Warner, 1 Giant Leap, the acclaimed remix project that fuses spoken word, sounds and images from around the globe. Extras include two bonus music videos, and retail is $24.95.
