Winds of War - 12:01am
Perhaps the biggest bomb of the summer (grossing only $40 million
domestically versus a budget exceeding $100 million), MGM will
bow John Woo's Windtalkers on 10/15, and fitting given
its disappointing box office showing, it will be a bare bones
release. Presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and 5.1 Dolby
surround, extras include only production notes and two trailers.
Retail is $26.95, and I guess we shouldn't expect a special edition
in the future...
Debuting a week later on 10/22 is the rough and tough indie Gangster
No. 1, featuring anamorphic widescreen and full screen transfers,
a 5.1 Dolby surround track, audio commentary with director Paul
McGuigan, deleted scenes, and the trailer. Retail is also $26.96.
Also on 10/22, watch for separate R-rated and Unrated editions
of the foreign smash Y Tu Mama Tambien, although full specs
have not yet been announced...
'Star' wars - 12:01am
Artisan Home Entertainment has just announced the street dates
for its biggest fourth quarter catalog releases, and fans will
finally be getting some of the special editions they've been clamoring
for now for years. In addition to that Reservoir Dogs set
arriving on 9/3, watch for the third DVD release of the
Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin's sci-fi hit, Stargate: Ultimate
Edition. The only details thus released are that it will be
a two-disc set, contain "newly-remastered picture and sound,"
and retail for $26.95. Stay tuned for more details. Also debuting
on 10/22 are new special editions of the classics Rio Bravo,
The Quiet Man, and High Noon.
Other Artisan 4th quarter releases include yet another Wishmaster
sequel, Wishmaster: The Prophecy Fulfilled, Wes Craven
Presents Don't Look Down, Derailed, and the Robin
Cook thriller Invasion. Retail is $19.95 a pop and street
date 10/29.
Finally, on 11/19 comes the long, long-awaited Glengarry Glen
Ross special edition, one of the most requested titles in
Artisan's library. This first-ever DVD release will include plenty
of extras to be announced soon. Watch this space!
Mad
about DVD - 12:01am
It just keeps getting worse and worse, doesn't it? For every
great TV series released on DVD, it seems like we're getting another
that's even more hard to believe. Add another head scratcher to
the list, the Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt comedy hit Mad About
You: The Complete First Season, due 10/29 from Columbia TriStar
Home Entertainment. This two-disc set presents each episode in
their original 4:3 full frame broadcast aspect ratio and 2.0 stereo,
and no extras aside from episode synopses. Retail is $39.95.
Also due from Columbia on 9/3 is the rodeo drama Cowboy Up,
starring the unholy trinity of Kiefer Sutherland, Daryl Hannah
and Molly Ringwald. This one comes with anamorphic widescreen
and full screen transfers, an English 2.0 Dolby surround track,
and bonus trailers. Retail is $24.95.
Criterion OOP - 12:01am
Rounding out today's update, Criterion has just announced that
the following three titles are now going out of print, with no
known reissue plans at this time: Playtime, Mon Oncle,
and Mr Hulot's Holiday. Get 'em while you can...
