"Happy #@$%! Thanksgiving!" - 12:03am
Scarier than Harvey Weinstein biting the head off of a bat, Miramax
gleefully announced yesterday that they have acquired the rights
to the first two seasons of MTV's smash hit The Osbournes
for DVD and VHS release. With season one due this November, just
in time for the network kickoff of season two, apparently the
growing backlash due to the (over)exposure of MTV's most popular
show ever doesn't seem to be fazing anyone involved. "As
soon as I discussed this project with Harvey (Weinstein), I knew
that Miramax was the right home for 'The Osbournes,'" said
matriarch Sharon Osbourne. As for what fans can expect, Weinstein
hinted "The show's incredible following, never-before-seen
footage and other DVD extras will make The Osbournes a key addition
to Miramax's family of DVD and video hits." Stay tuned for
the full details...
Not in the 'Mix' - 12:03am
Don't expect a press release for this one. Sources say that Universal
Studios Home Video has quietly pulled the plug on distributing
any further FlixMix titles, the direct-to-video compilation
franchise that launched less than a year ago with its debut release,
Boogeymen. While Universal reps would not comment, inside word
is that despite heavy promotion and consumer awareness, sluggish
sales for the follow-up release Ultimate Fights ombined with high
clearance costs resulted in the end of the venture. The release
of the recently completed third release, a compilation of Hollywood's
best comedic scenes, will reportedly be Universal's last FlixMix
title. Get 'em while you can...?
Street date alert - 12:03am
Just in from Universal is a 10/22 street date for the recent
Hugh Grant sleeper About a Boy, which will be released
in separate widescreen and pan & scan additions. Retail is
$26.95 each, and watch for full details soon...
In bad street date news, Paramount has pulled the Roman Polanski
thriller The Tenant from its 9/3 release slate due to "clearance
issues," with no new date announced. Stay tuned.
