Paramount musical details; 'Scorpion King' announced
Thank god it's Friday- 12:25am

The word that you heard is in, as Paramount has announced the full details for all those classic musicals due this fall. Alas, the specs are a bit disappointing, at least in terms of extras. Grease hits on 9/17 and will be released in separate full frame and 2.35;1 anamorphic widescreen versions, each in Dolby 5.1 and 2.0 and the same extras: new retrospective interviews with John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, Stockard Channing, Jeff Conaway, Didi Conn, director Randall Kleiser and producer Allan Carr, plus 2 trailers. Initial runs of these sets will also include a Grease Songbook...while supplies last, of course. Retail is $24.95. Better in terms of the goodies is the collector's edition of Saturday Night Fever on 10/8, which includes a new 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer of the R-rated original theatrical cut, English Dolby 5.1 surround and 2.0 stereo tracks, an audio commentary with director John Badham, 3 alternate scenes from the PG-rated version of the film, highlights from the VH-1 Behind the Music special, and the trailer. Retail is $24.95 as well.

The remaining batch of musicals due on 10/8 are relatively featureless, but all are presented in anamorphic widescreen and Dolby 5.1. Urban Cowboy, Stayin' Alive, Flashdance and Footloose all includes trailers, and Cowboy also features some outtakes and rehearsal footage. Retail is $24.95, and oddly enough, Paramount will not be releasing Grease 2 anytime soon it seems. Hmmph!

Can't stop The Rock - 12:01am

Oh, c'mon now, you know you've been waiting and waiting for this one to be announced! Fans of classic Hollywood high-concept cinema, mark 10/1 on your calendars, because that's when The Scorpion King will make it's long-awaited DVD debut in no less than three different versions.

Separate 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and full screen versions will be available, each with plenty of extras: an audio commentary with director Chuck Russell, the "extended version" of the film accessible via an enhanced viewing mode, the "Live Footage from The Rock's Feature Commentary" and "Choreography of a Fight Sequence" featurettes, a first look at The Rock's upcoming feature film Helldorado, a Godsmack music video, production notes, filmographies and the trailer. ROM extras include the exclusive Scorpion King Total Axess web portal which will feature additional commentaries, behind-the-scenes footage, deleted scenes, storyboards and other bonus materials. Retail is $26.95

Also to be released is a special DVD+CD version, which includes the widescreen edition of the film plus the CD Soundtrack of the film with new songs by Godsmack, plus three never-before-released live performance tracks "Keep Away, " "Awake," and "Spiral." Retail is $39.95.
