Pleasant-ville - 1:07am Funny how a film can go from a seemingly surefire Oscar contender to quickly forgotten after opening weekend, eh? Just announced by Warner for 6/18 release is Frank Darabont's The Majestic, an earnest (perhaps too earnest) romantic drama that failed to ignite the box office last fall. The DVD features a 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer and English and French 5.1 surround tracks, and extras include the complete "Sand Pirates of the Sahara" sequence and additional deleted scenes, filmographies and the theatrical trailer. Retail is $24.95. Espinazo del Diablo - 12:03am Just in from Columbia is another round of new catalog releases, and as usual it's a mix of the new, the old, and the pan and scan. First up on 6/25 is Anthony Quinn and George Segal in the war drama Lost Command, presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and English mono, along with a selection of bonus trailers and filmographies. Also due on 6/25 is the "queen of martial arts" Cynthia Rothrock in Outside the Law, presented in full frame only and English 5.1 and French 2.0 Dolby surround, with extras including trailers only. Retail is $24.95 each. Columbia has also announced the full specs for Guillermo del Toro's unjustly overlooked horror sleeper The Devil's Backbone. Presented in anamorphic widescreen and Spanish 5.1 surround, extras include an audio commentary with del Toro and cinematographer Guillermo Navarro, a making-of featurette, storyboards, and trailers. Retail is $27.95. Up next on 7/9 comes the urban drama Sunset Park, along with the imports Zig Zag and Beijing Bicycle, in full frame only with trailers the only extras. Last but not least, Columbia has set a new 7/9 release date for Punchline, originally schedule for release last February. The disc remains movie-only, with widescreen and full screen transfers and trailers. Retail is $24.95.
An 'Affair' to remember - 1:34pm Just announced from Warner Home Video is a 6/25 street date for Hilary Swank's return to the big screen in The Affair of the Necklace. Though the film didn't receive the critical claim or Oscar nods probably hoped for, Warner is giving it the full special edition treatment. Presented in anamorphic widescreen with English and French 5.1 Dolby surround tracks, extras include an audio commentary with director Charles Shyer, the HBO First Look and "Designing Affair" featurettes, deleted scenes with optional commentary, a gag reel, and the trailer. Retail is $24.95. Back to the vaults - 1:34pm Disney is once again raiding their vaults for what looks like every single catalog title from back in the 80's. Due on 9/3 is another wave of low-budget DVD quickies, all presented in widescreen with minimal extras (trailers only.) The lineup includes Indian Summer, Gross Anatomy, The War At Home, First Do No Harm, Prefontaine, Baby Secret of the Lost Legend, Aspen Extreme, Disorganized Crime, My Boyfriend's Back, Cabin Boy, Betsy's Wedding, Captain Ron, Puppet Masters, Swing Kids, the 1961 version of Babes in Toyland, Spaced Invaders, Heartbreak Hotel, Muppets Christmas Carol (full frame only), Washington Square, Celtic Pride, The Program, Mr. Destiny, and two real trilogies of terror, Ernest Saves Christmas, Ernest Goes to Camp and Ernest Scared Stupid, and Mighty Ducks 1, 2 and 3. Then on 10/8 comes even more fun, including Kazaam, the cannibal laugh-fest Alive, Billy Bathgate, Jungle 2 Jungle, Two Bits, Of Love and Shadows, and another terrifying trilogy, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Honey We Shruk Ourselves, and Honey I Blew Up the Kid. Retail is $19.95 each, and a Mighty Ducks 3-pack will also be available for only $29.95. Street date alert - 1:34pm After the morphing of USA Home Video into Universal Studios Home Video earlier this year, Universal has finally announced a new street date for Robert Altman's Oscar-nominated Gosford Park, now due on 6/25. Stay tuned for specs, and also due this week is the full press release for A Beautiful Mind... In Columbia news, they have kindly issued a press statement that a new special edition of Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down is currently in production, though no street date is yet available. So if you really love the film, you may want to skip that movie-only edition due on 6/11 and wait for the fully loaded edition. Stay tuned for more details..
