Who is Keyser Sose? - 2:37pm Continuing on their quest to prove they can produce DVD special editions with the best of 'em, MGM has just announced two new special editions of The Usual Suspects and Bull Durham, both due on 4/2. These "limited editions" also include collectible packaging, with a special edition in traditional packaging to be released at a later date. The Usual Suspects features new 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and full screen transfers and an English Dolby Digital surround track, along with a host of extras: audio commentary with director Bryan Singer and writer Christopher McQuarrie and a second commentary with editor and composer John Ottman, deleted scenes with commentary by Ottman, "Pursuing The Suspects," "Doing Time With The Suspects," "Heisting Cannes With The Usual Suspects" and "Keyser Sose: Lie Or Legend?" featurettes, a gag reel with Singer intro, trailers and TV spots. Cops and robbers - 1:03pm New from Warner is a very large batch of March and April catalog and new releases. Leading the pack is the Denzel Washington hit Training Day, arriving on 3/26 and featuring a 2.35;1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, English and French 5.1 Dolby Digital tracks, audio commentary with director Antoine Fuqua, a making-of featurette, deleted scenes and alternate ending, music video, filmographies and the trailer. Debuting two weeks early on 3/12 is the Gene Hackman thriller Heist, also featuring a 2.35;1 anamorphic widescreen transfer and English and French 5.1 Dolby Digital tracks, along with an audio commentary with director David Mamet, filmographies, and the trailer. Retail is $26.95 each. Then on 4/2 from Warner comes a wave of catalog hits and misses, including the last Vacation film yet unreleased on DVD, National Lampoon's European Vacation. Fortunately, unlike the other Vacation films, this one is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and even includes some extras! Can't wait to hear the audio commentary with Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo, and also included is the trailer and cast highlights. (Let's cross our fingers for special edition reissues of the other Vacation films!) Also arriving on 4/2 is Whit Stillman's Barcelona, the bomb Exit To Eden (also with a featurette) and the underappreciated Joe Vs. The Volcano, sporting a new 5.1 remix, the original behind-the-scenes featurette, the Eric Burton "Sixteen Tons" music video, and the trailer. Each is presented in anamorphic widescreen, with a retail price tag of $19.95. But wait, there is more! 4/30 sees the arrival of a few genuine Warner classics, including a 20th Anniversary Edition of the musical Victor/Victoria. Though not a huge hit during its initial release, the film has grown in stature as one of Blake Edwards' best comedies, and features include a new 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, 5.1 Dolby Digital track, audio commentary with Blake Edwards and Julie Andrews, making-of featurette, and the trailer. Retail is only $19.95. Other 4/30 Warner classics include The Harvey Girls and Calamity Jane, though specs have not yet been announced. Stay tuned! 'Zoo' TV - 1:03pm One movie dared to ask the question, "Are fashion models really that stupid?" And the answer is, of course, "Yes!" Arriving from Paramount on 3/12 is the Ben Stiller comedy Zoolander, which includes a 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer and English 5.1 and 2.0 surround tracks and a host of extras. Goodies include an audio commentary with Ben Stiller and writers Drake Sather and John Hamburg, 10 deleted and extended scenes with commentary by Stiller, an outtake reel, alternate end title sequence, two still galleries, and the "Start The Commotion" music video by the Wiseguys. Retail is $29.95. Also hitting stores on 3/12 is a wave of fun for the whole family, including the classic Lassie, as well as Andre and The Adventures Of Little Tree. All three feature 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfers and new 5.1 Dolby Digital tracks, as well as 2.0 English and French tracks, and trailers. Retail is a low $24.95 apiece. Paramount will also debut the recent William H. Macy and Laura Dern drama Focus on 3/19, which features a 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, English 5.1 and 2.0 surround racks, an audio commentary with director, and the trailer. Retail is $29.95. Last but not least, 3/12 sees the debut of the first installment of Sponge Bob, featuring the episodes "Nautical Nonsense" and "Sponge Buddies." The episodes are presented in full frame and 2.0 surround, along with an episode guide, the "Violent Femmes Sing SpongeBob," a "Backstage Pants" featurette, and "SpongeBob Secrets." Retail is $19.95.
Roll da 'Bones' - 1:03pm Perhaps the world wasn't ready for a supernatural Snoop Dogg? Failing to connect with audiences at the box office, New Line will nevertheless release a Platinum Series edition of the horror flick Bones on 2/26. The disc includes a 1.85;1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, English 5.1 and 2.0 surround tracks, an audio commentary with director Ernest Dickerson, Snoop Dogg and screenwriter Adam Simon, the "Digging Up Bones" and "Urban Gothic: Bones and its Influences," documentaries, deleted scenes, Snoop Dogg music video and concert footage, and trailers. Retail is $24.95. Watching DVDs in cars with boys - 1:03pm Columbia has announced a number of new March theatrical and catalog titles over the past holiday week. First up is the box office disappointment Riding In Cars With Boys, which gets the full special edition treatment from Columbia. The disc arrives on 3/19 and includes a 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, audio commentary with Drew Barrymore, four making-of featurettes, the HBO First Look special, filmographies and trailers. Retail is $27.95. Also due on 3/19 is the latest Leslie Nielsen spoof 2001: A Space Travesty (really, Mr. Nielsen, aren't those Naked Gun residuals good enough for you?) The disc features anamorphic widescreen and full screen transfers, English, French and Spanish 2.0 surround tracks, and bonus trailers. Retail is $19.95. Those of you dying for more Chevy Chase and Charles Bronson on DVD, 3/19 is also your lucky day. New from Anchor Bay - 1:03pm Oh, no, is Anchor bay actually branching out from their usual cult thrills and chills and going...soft!? Say it ain't so! Nah, no worries...although their new slate of February titles is a bit more heavy on the chick flicks than usual, there is still plenty here to appease the gorehounds... Due for release on 2/19 are a number of 70"s and 80's cult favorites. The Eric Roberts and Mary Steenburgen drama Cross Creek features a new 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer and the original mono track, along with the new 17-minute featurette "Cross Creek: A Look Back With Mary Steenburgen." A new reissue of the Oscar-nominated Frances features a remastered 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, English and French mono tracks, audio commentary with director Graeme Clifford, the new 30-minute documentary "A Hollywood Life: Remembering Frances" including interviews with stars Jessica Lange and Bart Burns, director Graeme Clifford, producer Jonathan Sanger, director of photography Laszlo Kovacs, production designer Richard Sylbert and composer John Barry. Shining star - 12:16pm Another good example of "the new Stephen King," i.e., nostalgic and dramatic with a bit of the supernatural thrown in, Hearts In Atlantis will make its DVD debut on 2/12. Psych-out- 12:16pm Coming in March are two new Columbia releases, one old, one new. First up is the heartwarming family comedy Soccer Dog on 3/5, presented in full screen and 2.0 surround, with the only extras being bonus trailers. A week later on 3/12 comes Columbia's latest William Castle release, the fun frightfest Homicidal. The disc features a full screen transfer, the original mono mix, bonus trailers, and a new "Psychette," called "William Castle and Homicidal." Retail is $19.95. Columbia has also announced the specs for that new Replacement Killers special edition, due on 3/5. Also due are the TV specials Tom Jones and The Lost Dinosaurs Of Egypt, the miniseries Ivanhoe, and making it long-awaited DVD debut, Peter Gunn: Set 1 and Peter Gunn: Set 2. New Line has sent out info to retailers announcing a 2/26 street date for the long-awaited Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me special edition. The disc includes the 134-minute cut of the film, a new 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, English Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 tracks, a new original documentary on the film, and the theatrical trailer. No deleted scenes are listed; however, we expect the official press release from New Line by the end of the year or so, so stay tuned for the final specs. Retail is only $19.95. Before they were famous - 12:25am Winning the 1996 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, Sling Blade was actually not the first time Billy Bob Thorton stepped into the shoes of Karl Childers. Now you can check out the original version of Some Folks Call It A Sling Blade on 3/19, when Vanguard releases a special edition of the film on DVD.
