The heat is on - 12:09am

Just announced from Paramount is a January wave of five Eddie Murphy favorites, led by the one-two-three punch of the complete Beverly Hills Cop trilogy arriving on 1/29. All three flicks include 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfers (part II is 2.35:1), English 5.1 and English and French 2.0 Dolby surround tracks and subtitles, and theatrical trailers. Additional extras include audio commentary with director Martin Brest, "Casting Beverly Hills Cop" featurette, new cast and crew interviews, a still gallery, and a location map on the first film, a deleted scene with intro by director Tony Scott, new interviews, the original making-of featurette, and "Shakedown" music video and featurette on the second, and new retrospective interviews on the third. Retail is $24.95 each, or a three-pack (with no additional supplements) for $74.95.

Also arriving on 1/29 is Vampire In Brooklyn and Harlem Nights, both of which are also presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen with English 5.1 and English and French 2.0 Dolby surround tracks and subtitles, and also include theatrical trailers. Retail is $24.95 apiece.

'Peaks' bump, 'Jay & Silent Bob' arrive- 12:04am

A couple of new street dates and bumps have just come in. You Twin Peaks fans are gonna have to wait a couple of extra weeks for Artisan's Twin Peaks: The First Season DVD collection ,which is now streeting 12/18. But Artisan has finally issued a full press release for the set, so check it out.

Also just announced by Buena Vista is a 2/12 street date for Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, though specs are still TBA. Stay tuned!

Street date alert - 5:07pm

just announced from Columbia are a spate of new titles, all due on 2/5. The early Zemeckis comedy Used Cars tops the list, along with the ill-fated sequel Funny Lady, the comedy Life Without Dick (ahem) and Grateful Dawg. Watch for full specs to be announced soon...

More humor from the other side of the Atlantic is making its way to these shores on 2/5, courtesy of Warner Home Video and the BBC. Ab Fab: The Complete Series 4 features 6 full episodes and audio commentary with creator Jennifer Saunders and producer Jon Plowman, outtakes, "Who's Who?" guide, and a "Mirror Ball" featurette. Retail is $34.95 for this two-disc set.

More fun will be coming by the way of French And Saunders: At The Movies and French And Saunders; Gentlemen Prefer French And Saunders. Both are presented in full frame and mono, with no extras, but retail is only $14.95 each.

Finally, we have Father Ted: the Complete Series 2, with audio commentary and and photo gallery, and the Walking With Dinosaurs sequel, Walking With Prehistoric Beasts, complete with two behind-the-scenes featurettes, additional interviews, a still and storyboard gallery, promo spots and fact files for each prehistoric beast. Retail is $34.95 each.

Street date alert - 12:50am

Lots of new stuff has just been announced on the Buena Vista website for early 2002, though exact specs are still TBA. Watch for the live action versions of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book and The Adventures of Huck Finn to hit DVD on 1/15, and a wave of "urban action" on 2/12, including Fresh, Hav Plenty, Squeeze, and Ice Cube in The Glass Shield. Also debuting on 2/12 are the indies Basquiat and Baz Luhrmann's Strictly Ballroom. Note that there is still no news on that oft-threatened Luhrmann three-pack of Ballroom and Fox's Moulin Rouge and Romeo + Juliet, but stay tuned.

Also just announced from Universal for a 2/19 release are the kiddie classicsBalto and Balto 2: Wolf Quest. Expect specs to be forthcoming...

'6th Day' redux - 12:45pm

Hey Schwarzenegger fans, remember that pared-down DVD of The 6th Day that came out earlier this year, even though our Region 2 friends got a fully-loaded special edition instead? Well, now Columbia is going back and giving us here a brand-new 2-disc set, complete with tons of goodies. Disc one features a 2.35;1 anamorphic transfer, English 5.1 and 2.0 Dolby Digital surround track, 5.1 isolated score with commentary by composer Trevor Rabin, and production notes. Disc two features the "On The 6th Day" featurette, "The Future Is Coming" Showtime special, 3 storyboard comparisons, 2 animatics, the "RePet" infomercial, filmographies, trailers and TV spots. Retail is $27.95.

Also just announced from Columbia is the Blake Edwards comedy Blind Date, starring Bruce Willis. Streeting on 2/5, the disc features 2.35;1 anamorphic widescreen and full screen transfers and English, French and Spanish 2.0 surround and subtitle tracks, but no extras. Retail is $19.95.

Warner February titles - 12:01am

Just announced from Warner are a batch of great classic catalog titles, all due on 2/5. First up is one of my favorite movies of the 70's and one of the best modern thrillers ever made, Klute. The disc features a new 2.35;1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, English and French mono tracks, the 1971 featurette "Klute in New York: A Background for Suspense," filmographies and the trailer. Up next is the classic Summer of '42, featuring a 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, English and French mono tracks, filmographies and the trailer. Both are $19.95 each.

Also coming on 2/5 are Designing Woman and A Touch Of Class, with both presented in 2.35;1 anamorphic widescreen and English and French mono. Extras include filmographies and the trailer, and Designing Woman also includes a vintage publicity interview with Costume Designer Helen Rose. Last but not least is The Bad And The Beautiful, in 1.33:1 and English mono, along with the all-new Turner documentary "Lana Turner: A Daughter's Memoir" and select scoring session music cues. Retail is $19.95 each.

Another slice of 'Pie'- 5:58pm

Just announced from Universal are the full specs for the no less than four separate editions of American Pie 2, all streeting on 1/15. Both the theatrical cut and the unrated version (with 6 minutes of additional footage) are available in separate pan & scan and widescreen versions, and all have the same extras, including English Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 surround tracks, two audio commentaries, one with director James B. Rogers and writer Adam Herz, and the other with cast members, "the Making of American Pie 2" featurette, an outtake reel, deleted scenes, "classic quotes" and original casting tapes, production notes, filmographies, trailers, Jason Biggs intro, and DVD-ROM features to be announced. Universal also held a contest last month letting consumers help determine the extras on the disc, so watch for those details to be announced soon as well. Retail is $26.95 for each edition.

'O' marks the spot- 5:58pm

In their biggest DVD release ever, Lion's Gate has just announced a 2/19 street date for O, the latest teen Shakespeare "reimagining." (That's right, it's "O" for "Othello.") This two-disc set features an anamorphic widescreen transfer, English 5.1 Dolby Digital surround track, two audio commentaries, one with director Tim Blake Nelson and the other with cast members, deleted scenes, additional cast and crew interviews, production notes, trailers, and on the second disc, the complete 1922 silent version of Othello, newly remastered with a stereo soundtrack. Retail is only $24.95 for the set.

Just announced from DreamWorks is a 1/29 release date for the latest Woody Allen comedy The Curse Of The Jade Scorpion. In typical Allen fashion, the disc features little in the way of extras, just a 1.85;1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, English 2.0 mono mix, production notes and the trailer. Retail is a bit high at $32.99.

One hot 'Summer' - 12:02am

New from USA Home Entertainment is the little-seen 80's parody Wet Hot American Summer. No, DVDFILE hasn't started covering porn films...but this is a great satire and if you missed it in the theaters, now's your chance to catch it on DVD. The disc features a 1.85;1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, English 5.1 Dolby surround track, audio commentary with director David Wain and Janeane Garafolo, a making-of featurette, deleted scenes, still gallery, a song sampler, production notes and trailers. Retail is $26.95 and street date 1/8.

New from Anchor Bay - 12:02am

Just announced are another wave of cult faves from Anchor Bay, all due on 1/8. First up is the first-ever U.S. uncut release of Ruggero Deodato's Cut And Run, presented in 1.85;1 anamorphic widescreen with an English and Italian mono track, a director's introduction, the new "Uncut and Run" featurette, a Dedato bio, and the trailer. Next up are Werner Herzog's Heart Of Glass, Stroszek, Little Dieter Needs to Fly, Lessons Of Darkness and The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser, all presented in 1.66:1 anamorphic widescreen and German mono, and each (except Dieter and Darkness) with audio commentary by Herzog and Norman Hill, production notes, a Herzog bio, and trailers. Retail is $29.95 each.
