Well, here's a pleasant surprise. Usually in The Cut List, I have to lament on deletions or edits made that often harm the picture or are made in the name of censorship. Rarely does a film show up on DVD with extra scenes intact, especially when it comes to showing lots of extra nudity!

But in the case of MGM's DVD release of Swamp Thing, that is just what happened. Though the box still claims the film is Rated PG, there is a rather surprising bit of extra nudity in this cut of the film, which didn't appear in either the previous VHS or Laserdisc versions (as I never saw this in the theaters, I cannot claim to know how the DVD compares to the original theatrical release).

The first addition occurs in the infamous Adrienne Barbeau "let me take a bath in the swamp" scene. In the previous video versions, you can only see a side shot of her breast, but on the DVD there are numerous generous extra seconds of full-on breast shots. Then, later in the film, right before the Bruno's big comeuppance, there is extra footage of two dancing gypsy women taking off their clothes at the beginning of the party scene. This footage is rather sexual, unlike the more innocent bathing of Barbeau, so it seems unlikely this would have passed muster as a PG film.

Why the DVD is a more explicit cut remains a mystery, and perhaps our email to MGM will yield some sort of response, but in the meantime, enjoy the extra Hooters plug, perverts!
