"Shhhhaaaarrrrrkkkkk!" When the first Jaws made like
$100 gazillion dollars, it was a foregone conclusion that there
would be a Jaws 2. Multiple screenplays, half a cast fired, two
directors, and nearly a year on location later, Jaws 2 finally
was born. While not as successful as the original either financially
or artistically, Jaws 2 remains a fun little movie.
Of course, like all movies, Jaws 2 went through the editing process
and a lost a few scenes in the interest of time. Many have written
in about a supposed longer cut that plays on television, but as
documented in the new special edition DVD from Universal, these
scenes were always meant to be left on the cutting room floor
and are often reinstated into television airings of the film to
pad the running time and sell more ad space.
All these scenes are included on the DVD, and include:
- "Martin, Ellen and Petersen" - An deleted scene
with Ellen and Martin talking in the car, after which the stop
and notice Petersen is parked illegally. Despite Petersen's
pleas, Brody gives him a ticket anyway.
- "At Home With The Brody's" - An extended scene between
the Chief and Ellen, followed by Brody sneaking into the bathroom
to check his gun.
- "The Vote" - After Brody meets the council to warn
them of the shark, there is a short backroom scene where the
council votes to fire Brody. All are in favor, except the Mayor,
played by Murray Hamilton. This is significant, given all the
past history between Brody and the Mayor in the first film.
- "Underwater: The Shark Attacks The Helicopter Pilot"
- Perhaps the most discussed deleted scene, this is an extended
version of the shark attack on the pilot. Usually seen on most
TV airings, after the helicopter flips offer, there is further
footage of the shark attacking the pilot underwater.
