Has there been a film in recent memory more reviled than Battlefield
Earth? A thinly-disguised Scientology propaganda film masquerading
as a big-budget Hollywood sci-fi extravaganza, Battlefield Earth
is an instant camp classic. Pity poor John Travolta...he has recently
been talking of a sequel!
Anyway, the DVD has been "edited for home video," and
features not only new additions but also some deletions. No reason
indicated on why these changes were made for the DVD and VHS releases,
and the DVD also includes even more deleted scenes as a supplement.
The alterations to the film include:
- The nightclub scene with Terl (John Travolta) reneging on
a promise to an unscrupulous underling has been completely excised
- A scene where Terl takes Johnny to the library and tells
him that there are "plenty of recipes for raw rat"
has also been snipped
- Another scene deleted for the DVD is Terl and Ker standing
before a chasm with a river below. Pondering whether humans
can fly, Terl pushes one over the ledge to his doom. Ouch!
- A scene has been added to the video release where Johnny and
friends try to find instructions to defuse the bomb
Given the fact that the movie tanked and this is
a director-approved release, it doesn't seem likely we'll see
the theatrical version of Battlefield Earth released anytime soon...
