Video: How Do The Discs Look?
Beautiful. Presented anamorphically in the film's original 1.85:1 widescreen format, The Friends of Eddie Coyle retains the grainy, gritty look of an early-70s film, coming across as gorgeous as anyone could hope for on this Criterion DVD. Colors are vibrant and well-defined, black levels are rock-solid and consistent throughout, and finely detailed textures really couldn't be more crisp and elegantly presented. The print is clean of blemishes, too, and I found no notable examples of compression artifacting to mention. Rock solid.
Audio: How Does The Disc Sound?
The mono sound mix afforded The Friends of Eddie Coyle also is just about as good as it could be. Dialogue comes through loud and clear, and while one can definitely see how a more expansive soundscape might make the film even more of an enveloping experience, for a film mix from the early 70s, you can't really ask for more.
English subtitles are included.
