The Video: How Does The Disc Look?

Gran Torino gets a solid 2.40:1 1080p transfer on its inaugural Blu-ray Disc release. Colors are definitely toned down, but that seems to be an aesthetic decision on the filmmakers' part rather than a shortcoming of this transfer. Finely detailed textures come across wonderfully, with clarity and finesse, and black levels are not only midnight-dark, but impressively consistent. There's a bit of noise that pops up here and there during some of the film's outdoor nighttime sequences, but for the most part, this is a loving and accurate video transfer.

The Audio: How Does The Disc Sound?

The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 sound mix afforded Gran Torino is slightly less grand, though. Perhaps, again, it's an artistic choice, but everything here is mighty quiet - I found myself listening to the film at pretty damned high levels, only to quickly dart the volume down when gunplay started up. Dialogue is presented cleanly, though, and the film's excellent musical score has a powerful presence. And I suppose that the upside to a mix that utilizes dynamic range so panoramically is that when stinger atmospherics and effects come into play, the results are emotionally powerful (perhaps moreso than a less-exploitative mix would allow). In any case, it sounds great, if perhaps a little quiet overall.

Also included are English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese Dolby Digital 5.1 sound mixes, as well as English, Spanish, French and Portuguese subtitles and English Closed Captions.
