Sabrina the Teenage Witch: The Sixth Season: DVD Review

Mar 16th, 2010

Paramount / 2001-2002 / 482 Minutes / Unrated / Street Date: March 23, 2010

In a nutshell, this time-tested TGIF ABC hit had all but run its course in the eyes of ABC brass, so they gave the show the axe in 2000. But Sabrina's preternatural powers allowed for The WB to pick up the show and reinvent it appropriately. So what we have on The Sixth Season is business as usual, to a certain degree (meet Sabrina, same as the old Sabrina).

In season five, Sabrina (Melissa Joan Hart) flew the coop to set up shop with a couple of comfy co-eds at a Boston College, and season six picks up right where that series of stories left off. And as will befall college sophomores (especially ones who look like Melissa Joan Hart), boy trouble is at the heart of much of this Sixth Season box set. See, Sabrina's fine and dandy with her beau Josh (David Lascher), but not only does he get an offer to be a photographer in Europe, but Sabrina's ex from high school (Nate Richert) comes back into the fold and start to date one of Sabrina's roommates. Drama!

But yeah, that's pretty much it. There are ritual sacrifices made by Sabrina and her aunt-witches - turns out witches don't react well when love doesn't go the way they planned - but for the most part, Sabrina the Teenage Witch: The Sixth Season is bubbly, inconsequential hubbub. Oh - and there's a talking cat (Salem).

So here are my sentiments in a nutshell: if you already have five seasons of Sabrina the Teenage Witch on your shelf, you might as well just pick this one up (and the next one - the show's last - coming later in 2010) and enjoy yourself. All others might want to steer clear.
