Every Inspector Gadget episode is included here, but is this DVD set worth its $100 list price...?
New Video / 1935 Minutes / 1983-1986 / Unrated / Street Date: October 8, 2013
According to the press release for this Inspector Gadget Megaset, this is the first time every episode from the two seasons of the beloved animated series have been made available together for the first time. Speaking as a child of the 80s who remembers reruns and syndicated repeats of the show appearing all over the place on Saturday mornings and on basic cable channels, the idea of starting at the beginning of the show and going all the way through it was hard to resist.
I should have known better, I guess. Of course, the adventures of our titular hero (voiced by Get Smart’s iconic Don Adams) as he tracks down Dr. Claw and M.A.D., utilizing the myriad of inventions in his arsenal to combat baddies are fun for a while, but it only takes a couple episodes here for Inspector Gadget to start repeating itself. Every cartoon from the era followed a certain rigorous narrative pattern, I suppose, but after a disc or two of this doorstop box set, it was difficult to keep up the fight.
But fans of the show with more of a tolerance for its geeky charms might find some serious value on a set like this one. There are no major bonuses included to flush out the background of the show – it really would have been interesting to figure out what the creators of the series were going for, and how it reached such success in America – but it’s nevertheless pretty interesting to have all things Gadget under one roof. For fair-weather fans, an episode or two will be just fine, but hardcore aficionados will be able to really dive into the show hard. Go go Gadget geeks!
