Somehow it's still on the air, but the magic is all but totally missing from Two and a Half Men's latest TV-on-DVD set....
Warner / 506 Minutes / 2012-2013/ Unrated / Street Date: September 24, 2013
How long can it stay on the air? The now years-old Charlie Sheen mania that flurried around Two and a Half Men's ninth season continues to be significantly more interesting than any of these Ashton Kutcher replacement episodes. Kutcher isn't solely to blame, of course - any time a show jumps the shark, a number of creative forces can claim responsibility - but if there was ever a spark to this once popular series, it's snuffed here.
When the new incarnation of Two and a Half Men first came on the air, a couple of buddies of mine in town would lament loudly to each other about it - they loved Charlie Sheen and all the charming dirtball sleaze that he'd used to spew, and while they both gave the show a couple tries in its new incarnation, after a couple weeks they completely gave up: by their calculation, at least they had syndicated reruns to enjoy every evening.
Two and a Half Men retains a sizable popularity somehow - even if its viewership has been carved by half, it's still a huge show - but only the most frantically dedicated fan of the show will find much value to this Complete Tenth Season TV-on-DVD box set. The gang gives this go-round their all - for a show that should have been stopped dead in its tracks, there's a noble stab at appropriately dumb-ass humor here – but even diehards will quickly grow weary of the sloppy comedy here.
