This isn’t perhaps the official last go-round for The Virginian, but after the episodes included on this Final Season TV-on-DVD set were aired in 70, the show got completely switched around – the studio changed its title to The Men From Shiloh, and while there were vestiges of The Virginian that audiences knew and loved on display, it just wasn’t the same. This batch of shows is the true end of the series, at least for those who loved it for so long.
Based ostensibly on Owen Wister’s early 20th century novel, The Virginian is a western through and through, a continuing saga of smiles and hardships of those who left the comforts of east coast cities and headed west in search of fortune and fulfillment. And the show’s episodes were longer than usual: each installment of The Virginian was an hour-and-a-half affair, so one had an opportunity to enjoy the adventures had by James Drury, John McIntire, and Sara Lane in an extended fashion.
And, like so many other shows like it, part of the fun of The Virginian: The Final Season is its revolving door of guest stars. It’s easy to recognize folks like Art Carney and Burgess Meredith, but this box set features short cameo turns from not only William Shatner, but the one and only Joan Crawford! The show as a whole had lost a bit of its steam by this stage in its history, but for viewers knee-deep in the summer rerun doldrums hungry for a throwback, a DVD compilation like this one is hard to resist.
And again: JOAN CRAWFORD!
