Digimon continues its full-season DVD releases with this Tamers compilation....
New Video / 1092 Minutes / 2001-2002 / Unrated / Street Date: June 11, 2013
The ‘digital monsters’ on this Complete Third Season DVD set are exceptionally energetic. It’s as if the show’s narrative pace has been amped up two or three notches – whether it’s the hyper-vivid imagery or staccato dialogue delivery (or both, probably), Digimon Tamers is a collection of animated adventures that unfurls at about mach four.
It turns out, though, that this rapidity ends up liberating Digimon Tamers a bit from its dusty nostalgia. I can’t attest to exactly how well the show as aged, seeing as I never experienced it when it was first on the air, but for 10+ year old anime, I found these tales to be poppy and deliriously entertaining. It’s fair to say that a little goes a long way – Takato’s, Ruki’s, and Lee’s adventures may be zippy and enthusiastic, but they also all kind of seem similar – but I bet both connoisseurs and fair-weather viewers might have some fun here.
And the bigger deal about this Digimon Tamers: The Complete Third Season is that it’s available at all. This title has a big online following – fanboys (and fangirls) have been clamoring for a comprehensive release like this one for many years now – and while it would have been great to have even a minor bonus feature dissecting the Digimon phenomenon included, this standard-def set is going to find some love on DVD retail shelves.
