This latest edition of the hit Lifetime show delivers exactly what the series has offered in the past, and that's not a good thing....
Sony / 563 Minutes / 2012 / Unrated / Street Date: June 18, 2013
The good news is that Drop Dead Diva is littered with celebrity cameos. On this Complete Fourth Season set, we get quickie pop-ups from Kim Kardashian and Patty Duke - even Madchen Amick and Serena Williams show up for a story arc or two. And for a show that is patently interested in the assessment of Hollywood glamour as compared to the 'mundanity' of real life, these kinds of cameos work wonderfully.
But celebrity cred is really all that Drop Dead Diva has going for it. This fantasy legal drama about a ditz who gets to heaven only to be sent back to Earth in the form of a somewhat overweight attorney (Brooke Elliott) works in fits and spurts as a fable for modern times, but it's paper thin: there's nothing going on here that isn't neatly and resolutely wrapped up with the end of each episode.
That being said, the show retains a surprisingly robust viewership, so perhaps this writer's disdain for Drop Dead Diva: The Complete Fourth Season should be (surprise, surprise) taken with a grain of salt. If a Margaret Cho supporting part and a revolving-door parade of tabloid-familiar names are enough to keep your television tastes sated, then this TV-on-DVD set might be just what the doctor ordered.
