These TV-on-DVD sets run the gamut, everything from trouble with twisters to a pretty serious run-in with a bad peyote trip....!
Paramount / 1522 Minutes / 1963-1964 / Unrated / Street Date: June 4, 2013
Things are pretty much the same here with our ol' Rawhide gang. We start things off on these Sixth Season collections with Incident of the Red Wind, in which Rowdy (Clint Eastwood) helps his herd through some treacherous twists and turns in the desert, and from there we move on to other Incidents – one involving a menacing mysterious beast (Incident of the Death Dancer), and another in which the boys have to figure out what the heck happened to their herd after a twister strikes (Incident of the Pied Piper). Long story short: business as usual.
While this TV-on-DVD set offers up reliably diverting western fare, like the last few Rawhide compilations, things just aren’t as much fun as the show was in its glory days. By the time of this Sixth Season, the show certainly knew how to get the job done in terms of dramatic fluidity, but there isn’t a classic in the bunch here (though it’s nice that Paramount has decided to release both halves of the season on the same date).
At the end of the day,Rawhide: The Sixth Season Vols. 1 and 2 are TV-on-DVD sets that will only have major appeal for die-hard fans of the show who are hell-bent on completing their collection. These episodes are fun, nostalgic throwbacks, to be sure, but they're not as dramatically robust as many of the show's earlier installments. Though the drugged-out episode that finishes the season (Incident at the Peyote Cup) is pretty fun….
