Angels Monica (Roma Downey), Tess (Della Reese), and Angel of Death Andrew (John Dye) are back again with another season featuring the trio helping people in crises. Through conquering fears and facing troubled pasts, each human fortunate enough to receive an angel’s assistance emerge from their entanglements and bruises all for the better.
While this Seventh Season set showcases the show absolutely nailing its well-worn pace, it's quite clear that things are on autopilot dramatically. Guest stars definitely help things - Robert Loggia, Faye Dunaway, and Delta Burke all pop in for a moment - but while even the most cynical viewers might applaud the show's earnest spiritual sentiments, there's very little gas in the tank here dramatically. It's engaging to watch these angels wrestle with the constantly changing sense of humanism they hold on to, but the scripts they're reading from are pretty limp.
But these are impressions of Touched by an Angel: The Seventh Season from a writer who wasn't a card-carrying fan of the show, so the standard TV-on-DVD phrase is appropriate here: if you loved the show, you'll love this set. Paramount has stopped releasing the show in two parts, which is wonderful, so viewers who want to keep adding Touched by an Angel sets to their shelves until the collection is complete will be able to keep up with that - and save some space, too!
