Is there anything on this Australian murder mystery set that we haven't already seen before....?
Acorn Media / 706 Minutes / 2013 / Unrated / Street Date: March 26, 2013
Great. Another mystery set. All right, Acorn Media – pitch it to us: convince us that with all the other crime drama material on the market, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries stands tall and demands our armchair attention.
Well, here it is: based on the a set of novels by Kerry Greenwood, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries follows the exploits of one miss Phryne Fisher (Essie Davis), a super-rich socialite debutante who has a particular interest in solving crimes. As it turns out, she’s relatively addicted to the act, and the plate-spinning gymnastics that often arise when Fisher has to balance her labyrinthine social life and her need to unravel mysteries can all but drive a girl to distraction.
Yet as a full endeavor, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries never quite makes a case for itself on this Series 1 collection. Davis is a capable enough performer, and if you make it through two or three episodes, you’ll likely find yourself compelled to see how the thing turns out, but as enjoyable as the show can be, Miss Fisher’s is really just another murder mystery show. Sometimes that’s okay, but with this one, I must admit I was left wanting more. Thank goodness Acorn releases new mystery sets pretty much every week – maybe the next one we get for review will be better….
