I'm sure it brands us as anime fanboy dweebs (too late), but who knew Digimon was this much fun...?

The ‘digital monsters’ on this Complete Second Season DVD set are exceptionally energetic. It’s as if the show’s narrative pace has been amped up two or three notches – whether it’s the hyper-vivid imagery or staccato dialogue delivery (or both, probably), Digimon is a collection of animated adventures that unfurls at about mach four.
It turns out, though, that this rapidity ends up liberating Digimon a bit from its dusty nostalgia. I can’t attest to exactly how well the show as aged, seeing as I never experienced it when it was first on the air, but for 10+ year old anime, I found these rip-roarin’ tales to be poppy and deliriously entertaining. It’s fair to say that a little goes a long way – after an episode or two following Tai, Timi, and the other Digimons, you pretty much get the point – but I bet both connoisseurs and fair-weather viewers might have some fun here.
And the bigger deal about this Digimon: The Complete Second Season is that it’s available at all. This title has a big online following – fanboys have been clamoring for a comprehensive release like this one for many years now – and while it would have been great to have even a minor bonus feature dissecting the Digimon phenomenon, this standard-def set is going to find some love on DVD retail shelves.
