The oddball HBO animated series comes to a bizarre yet often hilarious end....

HBO / 300 Minutes / 2011-2012 / Unrated / Street Date: December 18, 2012
Ennui and awkwardness abound in The Life and Times of Tim. This meagerly-animated comedy series takes distinct pleasure in forcing its protagonist (voiced by Steve Dildarian) into clunky, difficult scenarios, hoping that the show's lazy feel will increase these often painfully drawn-out sequences' comic virtues.
The Life and Times of Tim won't be back - HBO called this third go-round the show's last - and while the series definitely isn't the kind of thing that might merit across-the-board acclaim (you either dig it or you don't), its deadpan novelty is nevertheless somehow charming on this Complete Third Season DVD set. There's a lot of Ray Romano here, a lot of Stephen Wright, more than a little Larry David - it's not a consistent piece of television, but it knows how to borrow from solid sources.
I can foresee The Life and Times of Tim taking on a pretty significant cult following in the coming years. I don't know that HBO will see much worth in compiling a Complete Series set (even in standard-definition), but self-deprecating comedy like this tends to always find a market, and even if this final season of the series doesn't wow as a DVD edition, for those more on the show's wavelength than this guy, I bet it plays like gangbusters.
