There's nothing of particular note on this Happy Endings DVD set, but at times this series can be pretty damned funny....
Sony / 450 Minutes / 2011-2012 / Unrated / Street Date: October 23, 2012
Happy Endings on this Complete Second Season TV-on-DVD set doesn't branch out into territory that television doesn't regularly investigate, but its sassy, quick-whipped success is proof that great TV doesn't have to. Viewers hungry for something other than old stand-bys need not apply with a compilation like this one, but for those of us who like to sometimes relax in front of the boob tube and watch pretty people do funny and adorable things for twenty minutes at a time, Happy Endings fits snugly into the mold.
The show's scenario is, again, nothing new - a gaggle of youthful twenty-somethings try to make sense of the world around them - but Happy Endings is also (thankfully) not entirely tethered to bland caricature stereotypes. The main cast here (Zachary Knighton, Damon Wayans, Jr., Casey Wilson, Elisha Cuthbert) aren't cut from particularly unique cloth, I suppose, but the writing in Happy Endings liberates them from cookie-cutter normalcy.
For example, the gay character on the show isn't the one with a penchant for rom-coms and high-end fashion - he's just a dude, with baggy clothes and limited cleaning interests. And even the romance that seems to be constantly on hand feels fresh and humorously volatile. Happy Endings: The Complete Second Season isn't mandatory television, but I found myself looking forward to each new episode as this compilation picked up steam: just because it's not one for the record books doesn't mean it isn't cute, appealing, and frequently funny as hell.
