And so Designing Women jumps the shark... again. When Jean Smart and Delta Burke left the series in 1991, the results (as manifested by Designing Women: The Sixth Season) were mixed, but somehow terrifically accomplished compared to the fare on this Final Season collection. Fans of the show gave the series the benefit of the doubt as far as the casting switcheroo went, but after Julia Duffy came and went (her character's space on this season is filled by Judith Ivey, a sassy Texan widow), even with the lovable Jan Hooks as the Sugarbaker firm's resident airhead, Designing Women falls to the wayside here.
I mean, Linda Bloodworth-Thomason knows how to make a show - it would be unfair to call Designing Women: The Final Season a complete bust - but even though she and her team of collaborators were able to keep the show going after not one but two massive main-stage performer up-ends, this swan song incarnation of the series just doesn't scratch the same itch the show's early episodes did. Diehards will now have the ability to feel the pride of the entire series beaming to them from their shelf, but there's no question that the first three seasons of the series will get more DVD playing time than the last three.
