Video: How Does the Disc Look?

Ninja Assassin arrives on Blu-ray Disc with a capable, if not exceptionally impressive 1080p transfer. Color presentation isn't anything to worry about - the film's excellent use of bold, saturated colors and their juxtaposition with dark backgrounds comes across here with intensity and well-defined clarity. And black levels are inky from top to bottom. Edge enhancement and compression artifacting are also MIA, and this BD sports a lovely, film-like grain presence. Detail is the only aspect that sometimes gets lost in the shuffle: For the most part, textures come through with punch, but in a few of the film's darker fight scenes, a bit of smear is apparent.

Audio: How Does the Disc Sound?

If there are a few reservations in terms of Ninja Assassin's video quotient, this DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound mix all but completely compensates for it: This track will rock your balls off. Sure, dialogue sounds clear and pristine here, but who gives a crap? This track is all about the thunderous pump of body hits and slashing knives as booming music pulsates in surround channels, and this mix houses all these things perfectly. Low- and high-ends have exceptional clarity, atmospherics are immersive and panoramic: Top-notch.

French, Portuguese and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 sound mixes are also included, as are English SDH, French, Portuguese and Spanish subtitles.
